Rosemary Decker-Thomas Registered Member MBACP (Snr. Accred)
I have been a counsellor and therapist for over 25 years and have had a full and varied private practice throughout that time. I work as an integrative counsellor: this means that as different styles of counselling help different people, I draw on a variety of approaches to provide the best support for you in your situation. I believe therapy is a collaborative process and the first session will give you an opportunity to see if working with me will be helpful. You are not obligated to continue counselling with me after this session. If we do decide to work together I offer regular reviews to help us assess the usefulness of the work to you. I am used to working long-term and shorter term with people and it usually becomes evident between us how long you will need.
I offer individual and couples counselling and have extensive experience in many areas, including relationship issues, bereavement - especially loss of a pregnancy, death of a baby or child, anxiety, self-harm, disordered eating, difficulties such as post-natal depression and attachment issues between parent and infant, young people's issues, redundancy and work-related stress.
I have a quiet and private consulting room on the ground floor near Monmouth with ample parking space available. Buses between Monmouth and Chepstow stop nearby in the daytime.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a senior accredited and registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling from the University of Hertfordshire (1997) and have regularly taken other training courses as part of my continuing professional development. For example, I have trained in working with children and young people, bereavement, eating disorders, and working with parents and infants.
I have had a busy private practice for over twenty years and have seen people from many kinds of backgrounds and with many different issues. I founded and ran for over 15 years a Voluntary Sector Counselling Agency in North London. I worked as a counsellor with a local Young Carers group and joined with other Agencies in delivering a course for mothers and children who had survived Domestic Abuse.
I have a Postgraduate Certificate in Supervision and have over 14 years experience as a supervisor working with counsellors in a variety of settings: a domestic violence agency, a woman’s agency as well as students on diploma courses.
I also run training courses for other counsellors on my areas of expertise.
Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
