Romany Smith - In Empathy
I am an experienced MBACP registered Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I aim to support and guide my clients through the turbulent times in life and work together to find the path of resilience which leads to enhanced life skills, positive living and success. I work integratively bringing together a number of modalities, Person Cantered, CBT, Existential, Psychodynamics and Gestalt practices while working very much through a medium of empathy with my client. Some areas of specialism: trauma, depression, anxiety, anger management, bereavement, addiction, relationship issues and gender-based violence.
I am an empathy specialist. I wrote my dissertation on empathy and have continued to study and make empathy the core of my practice. I like to work with my clients first and foremost through the development of an empathic relationship where by I concern myself with your present reality and the impact the problem is having on you and from this close empathic understanding we will work together to discover your path to a happier existence. I care deeply about the well being of my clients and your success if my first priority.
"Empathy is a Psychological nutrient without which human life as we know and cherish it could not be sustained." (Kohut 1978)
Training, qualifications & experience
I hold a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Counselling, during which I trained in Person Centre, Existential, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapies (CBT), I have also undertaken training in a number of other and more specific areas which have included, Gestalt practices, Trauma, Bereavement, Sexual Violence, Self Harm, Infidelity, Childhood sexual abuse, Anger Management, Addiction, and art therapy. I am also a trained group therapist.
I have spent many years working with different disenfranchised groups, including addicts, ex-offenders, youth homeless, refugees and non-specific women's groups.
Personally I can say that my desire to help my clients overcome their problems and difficulties is born of my own pathway to surviving life difficulties and hardships, I know how hard it can be and as a result, I am able to work empathically with my clients. My primary modality within an integrative framework is to be humanistic and person-centred.
I look forward to hearing from you and to providing you with the help you need.
