About me

Hello. My name is Rob Yates. I decided to become a Person Centred Counsellor after personally experiencing how transformative it can be.

I am very aware that not everyone can afford the full market rate for counselling and that access to counselling is also further limited due to long NHS waiting lists. Because of this I use a ‘self-selecting’ fee structure: you pay based on your approximate household income.

I'll offer you a wholly genuine, safe, accepting but dynamic space within which you may explore whatever it is that brings you to counselling. I am acutely aware that you may bring vulnerability or even fear and therefore will work with you at the pace that you want to work. I do not believe in diagnosing or labelling people or experiences. I have a fundamental belief in your autonomy as an individual, in your right to be whoever you want to be and your right to use counselling in a way that works best for you. When facing struggles in our lives I am of the firm belief that the question that may be most helpful to ask is not 'what is wrong with us?' but instead, 'what has happened to us?'

Person Centred Counselling is built on the foundations of acceptance, empathy and the 'realness' and depth of the counselling relationship.  I have been honoured to bear witness to the potential of Person Centred Counselling to transform and to heal.

I'm a divorced father of two teenage kids. I have lived a life which, to me, has felt intense in the full range of human emotion and experience, of ‘ups’ and of ‘downs.’ Used wisely, I have come to understand how this rich and varied life experience helps me to connect on a deep level with the feelings and experiences of others.

By definition, the way I work and what I offer will not suit everyone. This is why I offer an initial, free introductory session so that we can meet, get a sense of one another and see if the way I work may be able to give you what you need.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling from Haulm, a training provider specialising in Person Centred Counselling. I am an individual member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and work within their ethical framework.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Areas of counselling I deal with

Other areas of counselling I deal with

The single most important factor in counselling is the quality and depth of the client/counsellor relationship. Person Centred Counselling can be transformative for many people with numerous different difficulties, experiences or life situations, irrespective of 'labels'.
