Rob Pleasance MBACP PgDip
I am trained in Humanistic Psychotherapeutic Counselling, and my working methods are grounded in Existential theory.
In practice, this means that our sessions together will focus on your relationships; how you see yourself, significant others, your past, present, and your future.
As a counsellor, I will also at times encourage the exploration of the ways in which the two of us relate. In my experience, this is often the source of real and sudden insight, where sessions come alive, and progress can be made in expressing the inexpressible.
The counselling I offer is fundamentally about respect for who you are, and the - often unseen or unacknowledged - strength it has taken to live. Although our work maybe about making changes and moving forward, I believe it is important to thread through the process an unwavering recognition that the past has shaped us in ways beyond our control, and how our much-hoped for desires for change can be dependent on the challenge of finding real self-acceptance, and acceptance of what we have been through.
Above all, counselling is a collaborative process. Whether you have specific goals you would like to achieve, issues you need to explore, or if you would like to undertake more expansive work, your decisions will underpin how we work together.
Alongside this, the core therapeutic principles which guide my personal practice are:
A focus on the communication of present experience.
A commitment to encouraging psychological insight.
Valuing emotional expression and integration.
Emphasising personal choice.
Fostering lasting resilience in the face of future challenges.
