About me

Hi. I’m River, I’m a counsellor, and I specialise in relationships. I also have a keen interest in loss, and in trauma, especially developmental trauma. I work with individuals and couples, including polyamorous relationships. I welcome clients from the entire GSRD spectrum. I work in an integrative way, weaving different ways of working into my approach to counselling. I believe each person is the foremost specialist in their own self and life, even if that expertise may feel very dull or distant. It is my role to serve as a tool to help you access your own internal wisdom, and make decisions that best support your chosen path.

My main speciality is relationships, and most of my work is with couples. I can support you to navigate difficult moments in your relationships and find a healthy way forward. My style of work focuses on gaining perspective, building awareness, and acquiring skills that help you achieve positive changes that you have the power to maintain in a consistent way.

I work online with clients all over the UK and Europe, as well as in-person at two locations in Edinburgh. As a first step, I offer an initial consultation, free, over the phone or video call, where we briefly discuss what issues you’re looking to explore in counselling, what your expectations are, and whether we are a good fit to start working together.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
