I’m Richard Schafer, a professionally trained registered counsellor (MBACP). I practice at London Kings Cross. In 2003 I qualified as a psychodynamic counsellor and began private practice in 2004. I have spent over 12 years working in the field of talking therapies as a clinical lead within statutory sector therapeutic residential settings.
Talking to a professional in confidence may help you to understand and acknowledge the feelings you are experiencing and enable you to begin to move forward in your life.
I offer you a supportive and empathic therapy, focusing on you as a unique individual with your own experiences in a wide range of areas including:
- low mood
- relationship difficulties
- low self-esteem
- lack of confidence
- and feelings of worthlessness in addition to many other concerns.
Often there is more than one reason why you might have a vague feeling of upset in your life. The therapy that I offer is a gentle process that can help you restore your natural sense of harmony and balance. I offer you the time, attention and respect necessary to explore, discover and help you with your worries. I will encourage you to access your own resources and guide you to reach an understanding of your life, enabling you to make the choices required towards your own greater Being.
I work to an integrative model which means that I work with different therapeutic principles, specifically applying psychodynamic and Person-Centred theoretical principles. This fits well with my personal philosophy in that I feel different people require different strategies to help them at different times during therapy. This philosophy has been developed from my professional training together with broad professional and personal life experiences.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
