About me

I am a UKCP accredited, Clinical Psychotherapist, Certified EMDR Therapist and Trauma Therapist, and have worked extensively with clients who have experienced a range of traumas in their lives. This includes childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault (across genders) as well as more generic trauma areas such as work based trauma, health related trauma, familial / school trauma, including bullying, as well as road traffic accidents. Trauma therapy is based within a range of interventions, and I work using somatic means (so working with the body) as well as using talk therapy and specialist interventions such as EMDR to support clients to work through distressing memories, and symptoms that remain from their exposure to trauma.

As a Psychotherapist who also regularly works with couples, I have completed post-graduate systemic therapy training and am experienced in working with couples both online and in person. I approach couples therapy from an integrative position; harnessing a range of interventions appropriate to the individual couple, and supporting exploration of challenges faced within the relationship as well as for the individuals within it.

I work in a way which invites my clients to build a high level of confidence in the therapeutic space, in order to ensure this then becomes a safe space; where the deepest most thoughts and feelings can be explored and considered without fear of judgement or negative consequence. Much of my professional work has been with clients who are considered 'complex' to many services, and has included working with clients who experience strong thoughts of self harm and suicide, or who have attempted suicide previously.

I can confirm that I welcome all clients, no matter their level of 'complexity', culture, sexual beliefs, religion or gender identity, and am experienced in working alongside additional services should this be required. I have substantial experience in working with clients who are neurodiverse, as well as with clients who are living with chronic health conditions, disability and terminal health conditions such as cancer, MND and brain conditions, as well as personal experience in both neurodiversity and disability caused by serious ill health.

It is my belief that counselling and psychotherapy is of incredible benefit to us all, and can substantially improve many human conditions including those which impact our mental health, physical health and wellbeing in general. With the addition of EMDR, I am qualified to provide a level of psychotherapy which can alleviate the levels of distress caused by a range of difficulties, mental health conditions and physical ill health. I approach psychotherapy as a form of intervention which is appropriate to receive in conjunction with modern medicine and intend our sessions to enhance the efficacy of any medicines the client might be prescribed - a holistic approach to our overall health and wellbeing.

For all aspects of psychotherapy, I offer both fixed term and open ended sessions, and am highly experienced in working both online, in person, and additionally in working outdoors providing eco-psychotherapy.

I am also fully trained as a Clinical Supervisor and have lectured on several qualifying training programmes for counsellors and psychotherapists at well known universities and colleges, as well as provided CPD sessions for a range of therapists from my own supervision and training business. My professional educative journey has now led me to undertake my Doctorate, which I am on course to complete in 2026. This is focused upon the use of outdoor settings within psychodynamic psychotherapy.

I very much look forward to receiving your message and organising our first session together.

Training, qualifications & experience

Training:

I am a fully qualified, UKCP / UPCA accredited, Clinical Psychotherapist. This means I have successfully completed four years of post-graduate study to achieve a Masters in Psychotherapy, as well as attended weekly personal therapy, received higher levels of clinical supervision and have practiced for over 450 hours to an advanced practice level.

The title of Clinical Psychotherapist, alongside an accredited membership with the UKCP/UPCA as a Psychotherapist, demonstrates the highest levels of training and achievement within the counselling and psychotherapy arena. In an industry which is vastly unregulated, this provides reassurance of the standard of psychotherapy offered to my clients and supervisees.

My core training is within the psychodynamic modality, and this continues to underpin my understanding within my work with clients. However, over the course of completing substantial additional training in trauma therapies, including EMDR, my practice has become more integrative, mainly because I now draw upon a wider range of theoretical understanding and clinical insight when working with clients who request to commence psychotherapy with me.

When working with couples I use much of the systemic training I have undertaken, alongside a psychodynamically focused understanding of relationships and individual needs within this. Often this can also involve aspects of trauma-informed work with couples, depending on their presenting difficulties.

I also am a fully qualified Integrative Clinical Supervisor and am trained to supervise individuals as well as groups. The supervision course is to a high standard and meets the BACP requirements of clinical supervisors; I have additionally been approved by the UKCP as a supervisor.

Experience:

I have a 30 year history of working initially as a Registered Nurse, and latterly a Psychotherapist, within mental health and learning disability services, across the NHS, private and charity sectors. This has involved leading several services through periods of substantial change and improvement, as well as providing consultancy for services who are requiring an experienced practitioner to troubleshoot, instigate positive change and oversee the relevant transitions involved with these processes.

I have significant experience in working with people who have reached crisis point in their lives for a range of reasons. As a trauma therapist, I often work with very complex clients who have been unable to work with other services or who have struggled to find a therapist who works in a way which feels suitable for their needs. My expertise in working with people in crisis means that I am able to work with clients who are considered higher risk, and I have vast experience in working in partnership with mental health professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists, care coordinators and other workers who are involved in crisis or secondary mental health care services.

I additionally work with many neurodiverse clients, and over the years have extended my skills to ensure my efficacy in this area due to my own neurodiversity. I therefore bring professional skill as well as a personal understanding in this area, and I believe this enables a genuine level of empathic engagement with clients which deepens our work together.

I am the Managing Director of a well recognised, very successful private practice in Sussex, which I founded in 2017 and has grown to become a large practice where low cost counselling is provided for children and adults, as well as for couples. I remain actively involved with this service, alongside the day to day manager who I appointed to prioritise particular aspects of the service on my behalf. A link is provided to this practice in this listing.

As a supervisor, I have built up a second business which focuses on supervision for counsellors and psychotherapists, as well as a range of other mental health based practitioners who are working with children, young people and adults. This includes more specialist work with organisations who support those who are bereaved by suicide, as well as organisations who provide counselling services for women and girls who have experienced sexual trauma; a set of six primary schools who are providing therapeutically led support for children who are considered in need, or where child protection procedures are occurring.

I have supported many student therapists as a supervisor and as the Clinical Lead within my private practice, and have a passion for supporting the development of student therapists as they transition from student to trained counsellor, an area which, as a former Visiting Lecturer, I have regularly found to be lacking in terms of training college input for students. I have therefore devised a teaching programme which covers areas such as carrying out assessments for clients; managing risk and working with suicidal clients; awareness of burnout and valuing self care; and growing an understanding of vicarious trauma and burnout.

Finally, as a Doctoral student, I continue to extend my own practice and knowledge by committing to this process. My thesis is concerned with eco-psychotherapy and I enjoy being able to continue to practice outdoors in line with my developing therapeutic work in this area. I regularly meet with clients in a country park in West Sussex, to provide walk and talk therapy and am happy to consider new clients for this aspect of my work.

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

My consulting room in Haywards Heath is a wheelchair accessible building, and additionally step free. Sadly, my Worthing consulting rooms are not wheelchair accessible and have a number of stairs to the rooms.
