About me

What Counselling/Psychotherapy can do for you

Making the decision about coming to counselling can be quite daunting however more and more people are looking to therapists for support.  It is important to choose a therapist that is right for you so I will give you as much information as possible to help you make an informed choice.

There are many reasons you may be seeking help; a change in emotions, a feeling of overwhelm, feeling hopeless, anxiety, unresolved emotions linked to life events, historical trauma or distress affecting you day to day?  A therapist can provide a safe and confidential space for you to explore and process any difficult feelings and emotions.

It is good to have friends and family to talk to however a trained professional may be able to give you a different perspective on your thoughts and feelings as they are not emotionally involved or invested in the outcome of your progress.

My approach

I am a fully qualified Person-Centred counsellor/psychotherapist having studied Carl Rogers theories in Sheffield. I am a member of the BACP and practice within the ethical framework and principles set by them.

What this means is that I put the client at the heart of the sessions, entrusting they are the expert in their own lives, enabling them to explore their self-concept in a safe, confidential and trusting environment, giving the client full autonomy to make decisions that feel right for them whilst supporting them through their vulnerabilities without being judgemental.

I like to support clients whilst they have a look at current or past feelings they may be experiencing and help to make sense of where these may be stemming from as well as learning to accept and manage any difficult emotions.

Often people’s perception of the therapy can be one of fear, vulnerability and weakness however once engaged they have found it to be a nurturing, supportive and non-judgemental environment which focuses on the therapeutic relationship to help work through any difficulties they are facing and surprisingly this can be through love and laughter as well as facing all the other difficult emotions we try and hide away from the world.

I believe that when we have a better understanding of who we are, our patterns of behaviour, we can then go forward, engage in healthier relationships, take charge of our lives and make our own choices and at this stage if appropriate I could help and support you to crystallise any future plans or goals without any pressure to do so.

Training, qualifications & experience

I studied Carl Rogers Person-centred Theory at Temenos Education in Sheffield.  Through experience and practice I believe Carl Rogers core conditions are necessary and sufficient in order for change to occur.

My Experience

Current Roles
I started my private practice working from a small and comfortable space in my home which provides a confidential and safe place for clients to explore issues they present with.  I have been working with adults and children promoting and aiding self-awareness enabling them to get to know their own process as well as achieve their full potential.

Working for a well-established charity supporting young people aged between 4-18 years to explore historical trauma and overcome difficult emotions linked to child sexual abuse. In this post I help young people to build healthy, trusting relationships and recognise risk.  I empower clients to take control of their lives and become autonomous wherever possible.  I am responsible for safeguarding all clients within my caseload and sign-posting to relevant agencies.

Previous Roles
In this government funded organisation I worked with adult survivors of incest and sexual abuse and the ongoing effects of this.  I supported survivors of abuse with highly complexed trauma however found this work to be exceptionally fulfilling especially after seeing clients being able to come to terms with and manage feelings relating to trauma.

During my training and for some time afterwards I worked with young people aged between 13-25 years old presenting with varying issues from low self-esteem, stress, anxiety, depression, personality disorder, domestic violence, issues around separation/attachment, sexual abuse to self-harm.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
