Dr. Rachel Woolrich AFBPsS
Flourish Clinical Psychology
The Firs, High Street
I am a clinical psychologist offering psychological assessment and therapy to adults with difficulties such as: stress, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, low self-esteem, body image concerns, trauma, phobias. I have been qualified for over 15 years.
What does assessment and therapy with me involve?
I integrate a range of evidence-based theories and treatments in my practice including cognitive behavioural approaches. These are recommended by the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (www.nice.org.uk) for many types of mental health problems. Assessment normally involves a face-to-face meeting for up to 1 1/2 hrs where I will ask you to tell me about what you are finding difficult. After this I will share my thoughts about what I would recommend. This may include one-to-one therapy with me, or I may recommend that you work through an evidence-based book with email or face-to-face support from me (this is sometimes called 'guided self-help'). If I don not think I have the right expertise to help you then I will let you know about other healthcare professionals that may be able to help.
In one-to-one therapy the first step is to develop a comprehensive understanding of your difficulties (psychologists often call this a 'formulation'). This then informs us what we need to work on together to help you to make changes and feel better. I consider myself as a guide on your journey. I have expertise in psychological theories and treatments, while you are the expert on you. When therapy finishes, you have the tools to keep going. We will agree goals that you want to achieve and I will ask you to practice things at home between sessions. I will be open and honest about my opinion. It helps me if you can be as open and honest as possible too. I tend to agree a number of sessions up front and then review progress.
Training, qualifications & experience
I undertook my degree and doctorate at the University of Oxford. During my doctorate I undertook clinical and academic training in adult mental health, child mental health, learning disabilities, older adults, clinical health psychology and eating disorders. I undertook my thesis in the field of eating disorders, developing evidence underpinning the cognitive theory of anorexia nervosa. I have published several papers in peer-reviewed journals and I currently work in the NHS in the field of clinical health psychology alongside my private work. I am an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a registered practitioner psychologist with the Health & Care Professions Council. These two bodies support and regulate my practice.
