Rachel Smeaton BSc. MSc. MBACP Counsellor and Psychotherapist
My name is Rachel and I am a fully qualified counsellor and psychotherapist with registered BACP membership. I am currently taking online and telephone sessions only. I have a practice based in Wilmslow and Manchester, where I can offer a private and confidential service in a relaxed setting. When face to face sessions resume there will always be the option to continue online.
Counselling is an empowering process that can have a significant positive effect on your mental health and well-being. It can be useful for an individual who wants to explore thoughts or feelings they may be having, as well as for anyone experiencing a problem or issue they aren't coping with or would like to resolve.
I am trained in is person-centred counselling founded by Carl Rogers. This approach empowers you to discover solutions to issues in a supportive environment. As a counsellor I offer you my honesty and respect whilst we explore issues you feel you would like to bring to counselling.
People may choose to speak to a counsellor for many different reasons. It might be because they feel they cannot speak to their friends or family about certain topics. Some people might feel comfortable speaking to friends and family but come to counselling to speak in a room free from judgement and expectations. Some people may choose to talk to a counsellor because they like speaking to someone who is not involved in a situation they wish to talk about so they can provide and objective viewpoint.
Training, qualifications & experience
I studied a BSc in Psychology at the University of Birmingham and this is where my interest in counselling first began. I then attended Keele University to complete my MSc in Counselling Psychology.
I have lots of experience working with teenagers and adults in a college and university as well as with working with a wide range of individuals in a GP surgery for the NHS. I have worked with clients with depression, anxiety, phobias, trauma, inner conflicts, family conflicts, LGBTQ+ issues and many more.
I now have a practice in Wilmslow and Manchester where I continue to see clients for counselling. Please feel free to contact me or visit my website for any further information.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
