I am passionate about working with both adults and young people and believe the most important part of counselling is building a good relationship. I know from personal experience that opening up to someone new can be a nerve-wracking experience and feeling comfortable with your counsellor makes all the difference.
With this in mind, I welcome you to counselling with the understanding that you may feel anxious, unsure or sceptical and I offer you a space that is free from criticism and where you can feel safe to be yourself.
I value warmth, compassion and transparency in my work. Though I know that I do not hold all the answers, I promise to be with you through whatever struggles or chaos you may be experiencing and help you to find ways to work through it. I am comfortable to sit with things that are difficult, traumatic, embarrassing or awkward; we are a team in counselling and I will be there alongside you.
Working with young people and young adults (14 - 25)
I specialise in working with young people and young adults and have specific training for working with these age groups.
I work with clients who have experienced trauma and historical abuse, as well as issues such as bullying, feeling sad, low self-esteem, depression, eating, self-harm, suicide and bereavement.
Young people and young adults say they feel understood and valued in our sessions together and that after the initial (often nervous!) meeting that they have really enjoyed coming to counselling.
I hold a current enhanced DBS certificate.
Working with adults
I work with adults experiencing many issues including anxiety, depression, feeling sad, low self-esteem, grief and loss.
I specialise in working with parents who are struggling in their relationships with their children or who have experienced difficult, negative, absent or abusive parenting themselves as a child.
I also specialise in working with clients who are currently in abusive or manipulative relationships with their partners, or in relationships where they do not feel valued or satisfied.
I am an integrative practitioner, meaning that I have trained in and use a variety of approaches in my work depending on what is best for you, including Person Centred, Gestalt, CBT, Transactional Analysis and Creative Therapies. I specialise in working with creative approaches and interventions and I offer this in my work with both young people and adults. Creative interventions are basically just another way of us working together to explore an issue if you are feeling stuck or for when it feels hard to describe something with words.
Previous and current work
Over the past ten years, I have worked as a therapist, specialising in counselling and bodywork.
As a counsellor, I have worked for charities and schools, as well as in private practice. I have also worked extensively as a remedial and soft tissue massage therapist.
I currently work part-time as both a counsellor and massage therapist in Totnes. Alongside this, I also work with schools to provide counselling services for students who need both short and long-term therapeutic support.
