About me

Hi my name is Rachel, welcome to my profile.

I offer counselling and supervision appointments from Buxton.

I am a fully qualified and experienced counsellor psychotherapist with over 15 years experience and I draw from different approaches depending on you. I strive to provide a caring, safe, calm, non-judgemental, holding space where we can explore whatever brings you to counselling. Together we can look at problems/difficulties, thoughts, feelings, behaviours, body issues/reactions, trauma, anxiety, the things that are affecting you. You may be looking for ways to cope, or want to challenge what is going on for you in the present moment, or possibly you're ready to explore and work through past trauma. Often the past impacts on our behaviour, feelings and thoughts today...it can flavour how we see the world around us..it's up to you how deep you want to work and I am here to support you through this process of self-discovery and self-care. I view my role as a therapist to accompany and support you as you find your own truth and find your own answers... Listen and hear your own wisdom.

"The Authentic Self is the Soul made visible"
Sarah Ban Breathnach

The main theoretical approaches, on which my practice is based on, is psychodynamic, humanistic, play therapy, psychosynthesis and mindfulness. I work with both children and adults. At the core of my work, I am client led. Because my training included different theoretical practice models/techniques I often draw from them in various ways. I believe in the uniqueness of each individual person and therefore I adapt the way I work accordingly

Within therapeutic work, a variety of techniques may be found useful from talking therapy, mindfulness, relaxation techniques, rewind technique, guided visualisation, dream analysis, journal work, time lines, sub-personality work, CBT, to art, clay work, or object work. Often working creatively can bypass the conscious defences and enables the unconscious to be heard by you. Creative work is not right for everyone and so the work is always client centred, I follow your lead, working at your pace.

I have a particular interest working with anxiety, depression, domestic abuse, childhood abuse, bereavement, and self-confidence issues.

I worked over 5 years as a counsellor for women's aid working with women who have lived with psychological, sexual, and or violent abuse. I currently lead a Counselling service at a local hospice, alongside my own private practice, and prior to this worked as a children's counsellor in a primary school in Manchester.
I enjoy working with and supporting counselling students on their journey of self-discovery and offer a limited number of concessionary rates.

Some clients do not wish to talk, they want to find ways to cope, Mindfulness has been shown to be beneficial in many ways to help reduce anxiety, depression, sleep problems & cope with long term pain.

Sometimes counselling has a more supportive role. There are some situations and times in life where things simply can not get better. Counselling can be a safe supportive place to speak the unspeakable, strip away the mask and also find your own tools and techniques that work for you to deal and live your life more fully and with self-compassion.

Counselling may be short term when you have a clear sense of your need/goal at the beginning, or it may be long term. Long term therapeutic counselling often relates to how the past may have shaped previous feelings, reactions and choices. I offer a variety of long term pricing packages to support long term therapy.

I work according to BACP's ethical framework and as part of my ongoing ethical practice, I attend CPD training regularly. I am also a registered member of BACP (British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists).

SUPERVISEES... I'm an experienced qualified practitioner that works with adults and children. I am qualified with a post graduate certificate in supervision based on the 7 eyed supervision model developed by Hawkins Shohet. Over the years I've developed an integrated approach using psychodynamic, humanistic, creative and transpersonal client led models/techniques. Please email me for more information.

What to expect when we first meet

Counselling appointments are 50 minutes long and on our first appointment it's a good opportunity for us to meet and you can see the room, get a sense of how you feel about working with me. Upon our initial appointment I aim to gain an understanding of what you hope to achieve. I explore with you what has brought you to consider therapy and what are your expectations, needs and hopes. This then informs my practice and the type of techniques and models that I use. When working with children I work in much the same way, however, play and creativity is the typical means of communication and metaphor is also frequently used to enable the child to work through their presenting problems safely.

Sometimes I may feel that you would benefit more from other services or colleagues that are specialist in particular areas. If this is the case I would signpost, look into offering you further information, and then you can decide what you feel would benefit you most. It is important that you feel comfortable with the therapist that you choose and the initial meeting session also offers you the opportunity to see how you feel about working therapeutically with me.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
