Rachel Kerr-Smith BABCP (Accredited) B.Sc, PG. Dip.
I am a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) and offer therapy based on the principles of CBT which explores the relationship between our thoughts, emotions, physical feelings and behaviour. Understanding your difficulties is the first step and by breaking down situations into thoughts, emotions, physical feelings and behaviours we can start to look at the vicious cycles we may be caught in. This can happen when helpful short-term coping strategies continue and develop into a longer-term problem, maintaining our difficulties and leading to a feeling of 'stuckness'.
I also use the CBT model in therapy to understand how our life experiences affect the way we view ourselves, the world, and the future. These beliefs can be helpful and at times unhelpful and can impact how we live our lives in the here and now. We may develop ways of being the world as a result of our experiences and never really stop to question whether or not these are helping us to work alongside our values.
I believe if we can understand and make sense of our experiences, beliefs and 'vicious cycle's' we can start to look at breaking unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaving to create change. Although this is challenging, in therapy we work as part of the team, using a step-by-step approach. CBT is a relatively short-term therapy and focuses on making changes, teaching you to become your own therapist in order to develop new ways of coping in the future, leading to lasting change.
If you want to find out more then please email me or call me with any initial questions and we can set up an initial session to discuss what you are hoping to get from therapy. If you wish to continue we can then arrange a further session and arrange sessions weekly or fortnightly going forward.
If after our initial session I feel I may not be the right therapist for you, I can give you further information on other services/types of therapy I think may be better suited to your needs. In this instance, I will not charge for the session.
