About me

Hello. I'm Penelope Brownjohn (Penny) I am an accredited Jungian Psychotherapist. I work within the ethos of the BACP. I'm interested in the individual finding a more congruent relationship within the context of presenting difficulties...to clarify for themselves confusing dynamics through a therapeutic relationship. My clients find a comfortable pace, for some it will be a brief intervention and others stay long term. I prefer the therapeutic encounter which follows Jung, we are in this together rather than the 'doctor patient' relationship of the Freudian encounter. Relational Dynamics, Transference/Countertransference and Dream analysis are all on offer. I have studied all the major Psychoanalysts as well as attachment theory and Transactional Analysis.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Masters Degree from the Society of Psychology and healing SOPH. I’m an accredited member of the BACP and work within their ethical code. My degree was Validated by Middlesex University. I taught on the course for ten years, teaching the theory of analytical and relational dynamics, I work with dynamics of transference, countertransference, and the unconscious dynamics of dreams. I also work on a more conscious level, more cognitive if you like, dealing with immediate problems that occur in life. I work with clients as they present their difficulties and different aspects of discomfort to help them to discover the resources that they have but perhaps haven’t brought to the fore. Clients come and go at their own discretion, there is no pressure either to stay or to leave.

I have been working for 20 years. 10 years with two NHS practices in Central London dealing with all kinds of clinical assessment, schizophrenia, narcolepsy, anorexia and bulimia as well as survivors of torture. I have worked with all kinds of depression including post trauma, panic attacks, bereavement, divorce. I also have attended courses in Boarding School Survival and attachment problems. I now work from home.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
