Pamela Johnson M.A. Registered MBACP (Accredited) EMDR Trained
I offer a safe, confidential, friendly but professional space free from the distractions of every day life. I will listen to you with interest and curiosity but without judgement. You can work at your own pace and together we can explore whatever is causing your distress and consider the changes you want to make.
My own introduction to counselling was as a client when life was difficult and talking to family was impossible. I had the support of friends but this was not enough to move my life forward. Asking for help felt difficult and contacting a counsellor took much courage. So I really do know how you may be feeling right now.
COUNSELLING PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY:
- to explore your distress, unhappiness, difficulties and challenges with someone not involved in your current situation.
- to help you to make sense of what is happening in your life
- to explore the changes you would like to make in order to move forward
HOW I WORK:
Typically after a short telephone conversation I will offer you an exploratory session to discuss your needs in more detail. If both of us to decide we wish to work together we will make a working agreement. Sessions last 50 minutes and when possible are on the same day and at the same time each week. Some clients choose short term counselling (typically 6-8 sessions) others prefer to have open ended counselling.
I believe it is of paramount importance that client and counsellor develop a trusting and collaborative relationship as research has found this is a major contributory factor to a successful outcome of counselling.
I work with individuals age 18 years or above. My approach is tailored to each client's needs drawing on concepts from:
- Psycho-dynamic counselling which is about the ways past experiences and unconscious processes influence our present ways of relating to others.
- Cognitive behavioural therapy acknowledges the importance of past life experience but works in the here and now to address current concerns.
- Solution focused therapy aims to help you address present or future concerns without considering any underlying issues.
I also offer Eye Movement Desensitisation and Re-processing (EMDR) therapy.
You may find it helpful to click on the GETTING HELP tab above where you will find more information about these and many other types of therapy to help you decide if I am a suitable counsellor for you.
I have a particular interest in post traumatic stress, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) bereavement and other losses such as redundancy or the ending of a relationship. My background is in nursing and midwifery education therefore I may be able to support you with health and childbearing related issues.
