Dr Nicola Sorfleet Counselling Psychologist (CBT & EMDR - Adults/Adolescents)
I am a Health and Care Professions Council registered and British Psychological Society Chartered Counselling Psychologist providing counselling, psychological therapy and clinical supervision in Tarporley and Chester, as well as via Skype or telephone.
I have over fifteen years experience of working as a psychological therapist helping adults, adolescents and couples to overcome their difficulties. My approach is to work with you to make sense of the things that you are struggling with, support you in exploring your choices going forward and help you develop any skills that you may need in order to bring about the long term changes you want.
As a psychologist I spent five years training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Person Centered Counselling. Post qualification I have completed training in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), which is a National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended treatment for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as studying for a Post Graduate Certificate in Evidence Based Treatments for Trauma (Trauma Focused CBT).
I have specialist experience in the treatment of anxiety, trauma (including post traumatic stress disorder PTSD) and chronic pain. I was most recently the lead psychologist for a national NHS funded treatment programme for chronic PTSD following multiple trauma and a visiting lecturer at the University of Surrey.
I also have skills and experience in working with relationship difficulties both on an individual therapy and couple basis.
Training, qualifications & experience
It can be confusing to work out whether you should seek help from a counsellor, psychotherapist or a psychologist, especially when there is often a great deal of overlap in the services being advertised.
Choosing a psychologist means that you can be assured that a nationally required minimum standard of education and training, professional skills, conduct, performance and ethics for practice has been met, as it is the only one of these professions that is regulated by law to ensure this. All psychologists must be registered with the HCPC in order to offer their services to the public and the HCPC will take action if any registrant falls below the required standards.
To qualify as a doctor of psychology I undertook three years of undergraduate study and five years of postgraduate study.
My knowledge and clinical skills in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Person Centered Counselling were assessed over a five-year period to ensure my competence in delivering these therapies. I also spent a year of my doctoral training working systemically with couples and families.
In order to maintain best clinical practice, I continue to regularly attend specialist workshops and master classes to further develop my clinical skills and interests.
