People can have different perspectives of therapy, asking for help can be difficult, opening up to a complete stranger can appear daunting, especially if you need to talk about something you find painful, or difficult to cope with. Counselling gives you the opportunity to to explore and share your problems that can arise at any time of life, identify what it is that is causing any emotional turmoil or stress and can help bring about effective change and overall positive well being. Counselling provides opportunity for you to be listened to, it also allows you a better understanding/acceptance of yourself.
We all deal with life challenges differently, it may be that you have the most supportive family/friends yet you still feel unable to open up to those closest to you. It may be that you are just unable to pin point why you feel anxious or even depressed. Or it may be that you would rather deal with your own problems as oppose to worrying anyone else. If things become unbearable for you or you just feel overwhelmed and unable to cope. It can help to see a professional someone whom you can trust and is non-judgemental towards you or your situation.
The aim in therapy is not to give you advice or find solutions for you but to empower you in working through your own issues. This may be exploring difficult or underlying feelings in relation to past/present experdincing. It may be that you want to change thoughts/behaviours in order to experience life more positively.
I am a qualified integrative therapist currently practising within, Cardiff, South Wales. Also a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP). I hold a Criminal Record (DRB) Enhanced Disclosure Certificate and full indemnity insurance. This assures my clients a high standard of care.
The Counselling Process
What to expect
I am committed to providing therapy within a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment, whereby client's can talk about any difficulties they may be experiencing, explore aspects of their life that may be causing emotional distress or elements of their lives they may want to change. Having this therapeutic space for self exploration can help client's to recognise and accept how they feel, help to gain clarity and make decisions/choices that are right for themselves, enabling them to resolve their issues or help find alternative ways of coping. Whatever, you choose to discuss during sessions is completely private and confidential.
I adopt an an integrative approach to counselling, viewing all clients as unique and capable of change and growth. I do believe all individuals will have their own way of coping with life's challenges. My foundation in therapy is person centred very much client led/non directive, personal and effective. I will work collaboratively with you at your own pace in your own time, enabling you to make choices and decisions that allow you to take control of your life again, resulting in personal growth and self awareness. I tailor my sessions to suit client's needs, I use a variety of theoretical approaches, drawing on elements of both Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural therapies.
I offer a 60 minute consultation, this will give you opportunity to share your concerns and reasons for counselling. I can give you an overview of how I work and we can both decide if we would like to continue to work together. This will also give you opportunity to ask any questions you may have. During our first consultation we can also agree to our contractual agreement which sets out clear boundaries for both of us should you wish to go ahead with therapy. Such as fees, amount of sessions and dates/time. I will also carry out a complete risk assessment, which really helps me to ensure that by agreeing to work with you, I am able to meet your needs. I will also capture personal information and any relevant background/family history. There is no obligation for you to continue with sessions after the initial assessment.
In order to benefit from your sessions, I would recommend weekly sessions. However, the amount of sessions will depend on clients and their presenting issues. Sessions can vary, I offer short/long term or you may prefer an open ended contract. I will work with you as long as any work continues to benefit you.
We will hold regular reviews to check your progress and we can discus what is helping/hindering therapy at any stage. I believe these discussions are important so that I can continue to provide the best support to you. As an integrative Counsellor I will draw upon a number of tools and interventions depending on your needs. I will also invite you to give feedback.
Code of ethics
As a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapist (MBACP), currently working towards full accreditation. I fully adhere to its code of ethics and good practice and subject to it's complaints procedure.
Training, qualifications & experience
My interest in counselling and psychotherapy began when I started some voluntary work within a drug and alcoholic rehabilitation hostel. I became interested in how both past and present experiencing can impact a persons life in terms of well being and behaviours. I was drawn to supporting vulnerable young people/adults with their addictions and emotional problems which led me to begin my counselling studies. I continued to pursue my passion for counselling and therapy at Coleg Nant Garw, Treforest, South Wales. During my counselling studies I had opportunity to work with people from all different cultural and diverse backgrounds experiencing a range of varied emotional and physical difficulties.
Since my studies I have had extensive experience working as a counsellor for Gofal a charity, supporting clients experiencing mental health. I have extensive knowledge and experience of working with issues such as fears, anxiety, depression, low self esteem, loss and grief all of which can have a huge impact on a persons life and relationships. I have a proven ability to empathise with individuals whilst retaining an objective realistic approach to their needs and therapy.
I also gained experience working within Place 2 be, a children's charity providing counselling and therapeutic support to children suffering from emotional and behavioural difficulties, helping them to cope with wide-ranging and often complex social issues including bullying bereavement, domestic violence, family breakdown, neglect and trauma. Building children;s resilience through creative work and play.
I am committed to my ongoing professional and personal development and I attend regular counselling workshops and courses that will enhance my practice and to keep my updated within the counselling field. I also attend regular monthly supervision.
