New Horizons Counselling Services
New Horizons is a counselling and therapeutic environment based in West Lothian. New Horizons focuses on helping adults, adolescents and young people work through emotional or behavioural issues by focusing on a person centred approach. We offer a confidential, non judgemental and supportive environment for our clients.
Many clients who use New Horizons initially engage in our service because they feel upset or confused about aspects in their lives and are seeking clarity or a way to cope with what they are feeling. Our supportive approach focuses on helping our clients to work through trauma until they feel they no longer need to use our services.
Contacting a counsellor for the first time can be a daunting process so we offer a free, no obligation initial half hour assessment which enables the client to determine whether or not counselling is the best route for them.
What is Counselling?
Counselling is a therapeutic vehicle designed to help clients work through trauma and upset by helping the client achieve clarity of thought and set small, manageable goals in order to move on from their challenges.
Counselling can take many forms, but the core focus of New Horizons is to remain empathetic and non judgemental of our clients at all times. Often clients who contact New Horizons are confused or upset and are unable to face their challenges on their own.
We analyse a variety of factors to determine the route cause of the issues which can include patterns of behaviour, childhood and past relationships or current environment. The direction that therapy takes is largely dependent on the individual client. The main purpose of counselling is to help the client gain clarity and to assist with their recovery in the future. New Horizons offers a variety of services for our clients. Our therapists are trained to offer our clients practical and emotional support until they feel they no longer need our help.
Our clients tell us what they want to achieve from their sessions and our therapists assist the clients with goal setting and by using various techniques throughout the sessions until the client feels they have achieved their goals. This can be done via one to one counselling where our clients can explore their feelings with their therapist in a safe, supported and confidential environment.
We also offer group therapy sessions and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) where required to assist with many areas including smoking cessation, alcohol or drug rehabilitation, weight loss or anger management.
In addition, New Horizons have developed rehabilitation packages for clients who have been diagnosed with chronic illness such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes and many more. Rehabilitation programmes include counselling, fitness rehabilitation and advice from our dieticians.
Typically the majority of our one to one or group sessions are self-funded by the client or may be funded through private medical insurance policies purchased by the client. However, we also offer a bespoke charity funded package for certain client groups. Please enquire if you are eligible for charity funding.
We recognise that people who have been diagnosed with a chronic illness such as cancer, heart disease or diabetes may need counselling as well as additional rehabilitation services. They may need to make some significant lifestyle changes on their GP or consultants request. If a client has been ill and off work for a prolonged period of time, or has had to give us work all together due to their illness, they may need counselling, but may not be in a position to afford to pay for this themselves. New Horizons has secured charity funding for certain client groups so this service is free of charge or may be partially funded for some clients.
Clients who have been diagnosed with a chronic illness may be affected and may require different levels of support depending on the age and stage of life they are diagnosed with their illness. For example, a child with an illness is unlikely to need support with debt management, family planning or running a home and is more likely to need support with self-esteem, gaps in education and future preparation for adolescence or adulthood. Conversely, if the main earner in a family has been diagnosed with chronic illness they may benefit from support in debt management, planning for the future or safeguarding the interests of their family.
