About me

My name is Nerissa Shaw and I'm pleased to offer counselling for a wide range of issues in several locations around Somerset.

Counselling is different for every person because everyone is an individual. I work in a way which means that you are at the centre of the process and you set the pace and depth of the work. I, as your counsellor, am there to walk beside you, listen to you, offer you my insights and support you as you look into the things that are causing you pain.

Counselling will help you to explore your difficulties and understand the emotions behind them. The aim of the process is to help you find ways of managing your life, perhaps by seeing things in a different way, or gaining a deeper understanding of what is happening or has happened to you.

I work largely according to a person-centred model with elements of other types of counselling as part of my system. However, your needs are always at the top of the agenda and I feel that you are often best placed to ask for what you need from the counselling process.

I have specialist experience in eating disorders and other issues around food and eating.

I offer face-to-face appointments in Ilminster as well as remotely by Zoom or phone.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling from as well as a Bsc.(Hons) and an MA.

I also hold a Post Qualifying Diploma in Counselling Children and Adolescents

I have completed extra training in working with Trauma and Dissociation and specialise in working with Eating Disorders.

I teach trainee counsellors at diploma level, particularly in the areas of mental health and wellness and working with the Shadow. I am also a tutor for other types of counselling training.

I came to counselling through my own experiences in life and after working with young people as a secondary school teacher. I work with many different types of client from all walks of life and have specialist knowledge in mental health. I am a Registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and work within their ethical guidelines.

I previously worked in the City of London before becoming a secondary school teacher as well as spending several years working for a charity more recently. Outside of my private practice I am the Clinical Lead for an eating disorder charity

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
