About me

I'm a chartered counselling psychologist and psychotherapist registered with the British Psychological Society (BPS), Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). I work with individuals and couples from my practice in the centre of Maidstone in Kent.

Individual Counselling/Therapy

My approach is an integration of therapeutic approaches viewing both past and present experiences and situations as being important in influencing the ways in which we experience our lives. By considering these together we will explore ways in which you can gain a greater understanding of yourself to enable you to move on from issues that you feel might be holding you back.

Couples Counselling

Relationship counselling can help you both gain an understanding of the reasons for the difficulties you are experiencing and consider the best ways for you both to move forward.

The types of issues that lead a couple to consider counselling can be varied however examples include; couples who have recently got married, who are experiencing issues around fertility, infidelity, empty nest or challenges arising from being a blended family.

Below I have tried to include information that will hopefully help you decide whether I might be the right therapist for you to work with. If you have any other questions that are not answered here please feel free to contact me to discuss these. I am happy to have a confidential discussion over the phone to answer any questions with no obligation to meet if you decide you do not wish to.

Training, qualifications & experience

Prior to training as a Counselling Psychologist and Psychotherapist, I first studied Fine Art before returning to complete a BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology. During my training as a Counselling Psychologist and Integrative Psychotherapist, I have also trained in Person-Centred and Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) approaches.

Throughout my career I have worked in both primary and secondary mental health services in the NHS and charitable organisations as well as within specialist weight loss surgery services. Alongside working in private practice I also work as a lecturer in counselling psychology as well as within a private hospital in Kent where I provide psychological support for individuals experiencing either mental health difficulties, managing major life transitions following diagnosis, surgery and/or other health-related difficulties.

Below I have indicated some specific areas I have experience of working with. The terms used here might not feel as though they match exactly what you are experiencing. This is perfectly natural so you might want to come along and talk over what you are experiencing without labelling it as anything in particular.

HCPC
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Additional information

All therapy sessions, including the initial meeting, are charged at the same rate. Working with individual clients and couples requires somewhat different approaches which are reflected in my fees and length of sessions. I also accept referrals for assessments required ahead of undergoing cosmetic surgery; fees for which can be found below.

I am registered with BUPA and Vitality Healthcare to accept referrals via your health insurance.

Unless sessions are being paid via your health insurance, fees can be paid at the end of each session by cash or cheque or alternatively by BACS transfer if after discussion we feel this is a more convenient option.

  • Individual self-funded sessions: £80 per session lasting 50 minutes.
  • Couples self-funded sessions: £90 per session lasting 60 minutes.
  • Reports/long e-mails or calls/ and letter writing are charged at £60 per hour or part thereof.

If you would like to make use of your health insurance, please discuss this with me before booking a session. Before meeting for an initial session, please also check with your insurance company whether your policy is valid and to find out the number of sessions that you are covered for.

If at any point during therapy your policy does not qualify for benefit or if your policy expires then you will be responsible for paying any fees. Please note that missed or cancelled sessions are not usually covered by insurance companies.
