The Forum At Greenwich
My core belief is that everyone carries within themselves answers to life’s challenges. No one can know you better than yourself, however sometimes we need a helping hand to get to a place of knowing this.
My role as a therapist is to facilitate the most effective environment in which you will learn how to access your inner resources. The therapy process is directed by the client and provides a confidential space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. I hope that as you share your experience with me your self-awareness and self-trust will increase and this will result in healing and restoring wellness in a way that is best for you.
My hope is that through this process you will flourish in your own unique way and become all that you can be.
I decided to become a counsellor following my own therapeutic journey. I experienced life changing benefits and wanted to be able to offer similar help and opportunity for bettering the quality of life to others. I have undergone Person-Centred Approach training, which fits with my personal view of what effective help is.
I am also interested in the link between our body and mind. I became aware of the impact that our physical health can have on our emotional state and vice versa. I obtained a foundation certificate in Systematic Kinesiology to gain tools in holistic therapy. Kinesiology uses muscle testing techniques to determine root causes of ill health. It focuses on restoring balance within the body through a range of non-invasive techniques. I feel this holistic approach to healthcare is complementary to counselling as often the underling cause of physical issues is rooted in an emotional problem.
Person-Centred Approach to Counselling
Psychologist Carl Rogers (1902 – 1987) developed Person-Centred Approach to Counselling. The choice of name emphasises that this approach focuses on the individual's subjective view of self and the world.
The Rogerian theory is based on the understanding that people are essentially good and have an innate drive for self-development and growth (termed self-actualizing tendency). Therefore, this therapeutic process is client-led and attention is given to understanding the client’s perception of themselves.
One of the most important aspects of helping clients overcome this is the quality of the counselling relationship. The therapist is responsible for facilitating an atmosphere that will enable the client to tap into inner resources and bridge the gap between false and real self. The therapist needs to be able to extend towards the client “three core conditions”: empathy, unconditional positive regards (non-judgmental), and congruence (honesty). These qualities, if received by the client, will create a safe place, for the individual to accept all aspects of self and will lead to living more authentic and fulfilling life.
"As no one else can know how we perceive, we are the best experts on ourselves." Carl Rogers
