Counsellor to Adults and Young People/ Clinical Supervisor

About me

Hello and a very warm welcome to my profile.

I am Michelle I am an experienced registered Counsellor, supporting the emotional wellbeing of both adults, children and young people.

I have a comfortable and welcoming therapy space where I am able to support in person sessions, and in addition I offer an online service for those who may prefer to work online or are from a wider geographical area and would need to work online. I welcome referrals throughout the United Kingdom and overseas. I hold additional insurance for overseas work.

My therapeutic approach is very much client-centred.  I work in an and collaborative way with empathy, non-judgement and compassion. I offer an ethical, safe and supportive relationship which will aim to underpin all of the therapeutic work that we do together and is important to achieve successful therapy outcomes. I will work with you to help you develop a better understanding of yourself and your difficulties, and I will support you in learning strategies and skills that you can use to help you to cope with difficult feelings and to improve your wellbeing, both at the present time and in the future.

I feel it important to work holistically and intuitively which means I consider the needs of each individual. I am interested in the power of psycho-education, which links mind and body to create an understanding of emotions.  I aim to empower you to work with your negative feelings through an emerging understanding of self.

‘Since undertaking the counselling, my understanding of the way I view myself and the world has changed beyond measure. As well as a gradual improvement in my well - being over the course of the sessions, I now have a stronger sense of empowerment and acceptance of ownership around my thoughts and feelings. This has had a big impact on my decision making and relationships with others already, and due to the internalisation of the strategies and processes, I anticipate this will continue. Michelle’s approach is very much about making the client feel at ease and in control, which she does by inspiring absolute confidence and trust in her. This makes the experience a hugely positive one. Having said that, the nature of counselling is that there are some challenging and upsetting moments. Michelle, even with the constraints placed on her by having to work online, was acutely aware of when it was becoming difficult and she very skillfully supported and directed me through these vulnerable moments. The blend of support and therapeutic engagement, with a more general sharing of hands on “life” skills and knowledge, make this counselling package hugely valuable as it is instantly relatable to the complexities of the real world. I would say this experience has undoubtedly helped me change my life’ (Adult Feedback)

I am an integrative therapist, my clinical practice is evidence-based and I draw on a range of therapeutic models according to the particular needs and preferences of each individual client.  I have a broad range of training and experience of working with many emotional issues but I do have some specialist areas in which I have studied and worked in extensively. I consider these areas to be:

Panic Attacks, Anxious Feelings, Obsessive thinking, Phobia's, Depression

I work with anxiety extensively with children, young people and adults and I have over twenty years’ experience of working with anxiety and panic.  In addition to my therapeutic work, many years ago, I created a self-help website to help people of all ages to understand these difficult symptoms and to learn how to support their own wellbeing when experiencing them.

Aside from my client work, I work with schools and other agencies to promote understanding of anxiety and how this may manifest in students/ employees and to help organisations to support those who are experiencing these symptoms.

The online resource is www.itsjustafeeling.co.uk

The Fear Monster Concept ® Anxiety Client Course.

A Pre-recorded course which is available to clients who wish to learn about my fear monster ® concept in order to help them to understand and regain quality of life from anxious symptoms.

‘I would recommend Michelle for support with anxiety and panic. I would say she is the best resource I have come across and I have looked at them all ! Even the sainted Claire Weekes. Michelle really does know how to succeed with panic anxiety and agoraphobia and sensibly prepares you for the fact that you must be vigilant of circumstances that could make you relapse but again tells you how to deal with those’ (Adult Feedback)

‘I'm feeling less anxious, I definitely would recommend very good quality and professional service’ (Adult Feedback)

PTSD

I have extensive experience of working with young people and adults who are experiencing PTSD and flashbacks. I work in a trauma informed way to support you in learning how to manage your symptoms and to process your trauma through a greater understanding of who you are and what has happened to you.

‘Michelle helped me to find ways to express my feelings, she was someone I saw once a week that helped to save my life. I now know how to solve and face life's struggles and learn in my own self how to acknowledge these feelings. I have learnt that it is OK to feel them. I still have some struggles but I can cope now. Michelle saved my life and stopped me when I was going to rock bottom.  I now love myself and I am more independent. It has been life changing to me and my life’ (Young Person)

‘Michelle has always been very approachable and easy for.... to relate to.  I would not hesitate to recommend, flexible and adaptable, open minded’(Parent Feedback)

Self-Harm

I work extensively with adults, children and young people who are experiencing self-harm. My approach is to work with the unresolved feelings underneath self-harming whilst working together to create individual coping strategies that can support you in working with the urge to self-harm.

‘We were unsure what support you could give **** specific to self-harm and suicidal thoughts and at first this was what we thought she needed. Another agency seemed to offer this and this was why we pursued appointments with them, which as you know came to nothing! We now recognise that the journey she has been on with you has given her a greater lasting understanding of her feelings which has lead her to no longer self-harming, which is a great result and has equipped her  with coping strategies for the future’ (Parent Feedback)

‘I wasn’t scared to talk and Michelle Listened’ (Child Feedback)

Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse

I have studied up to masters level in domestic violence and sexual abuse and have extensive experience of working with adults, children and young people whom have experienced this. I have specific children and adolescent knowledge in this area and my current research project is monitoring a service whom are working emotionally with children and young people impacted emotionally by living in households where they have experienced domestic abuse.

‘Full details given at the assessment session, I knew what to expect. Michelle has always shown respect and interest towards my religious and cultural values/ beliefs which has been fundamental for me. It has been brilliant and has helped me enormously, I am forward thinking and back to my positive confident self once again’ (Adult Feedback)

‘Dear Michelle, Thank you for everything that you have done, you've helped me a lot so thank you’ (Young Person feedback)

Bereavement, Grief and Loss

My Bereavement experience comes from many years of working as a hospice based Counsellor. Within my role I worked with adults, children and young people. I supported pre and post bereavement as well as supporting adults who were given a terminal diagnosis during their last twelve months of life. Bereavement work is complex and there are many aspects to consider when working with those touched by death and dying.

‘Michelle has been fantastic with *** he has looked forward to attending each week. Every time we enter the building we are greeted with the warmest of welcomes. Michelle has really listened to ***and given him the tools he needs to be able to manage. I cannot express our thanks enough’ (Parent Feedback)

‘You are a very approachable and professional lady, my confidence has improved and general well-being’ (Adult Feedback)

‘The experience has been very valuable for me and I have finished the process with much more hope than when I started’ (Adult Feedback)

‘*** is such a strong independent individual now. Thank you, you have helped our daughter to become strong again. She has more self-confidence, is happier, sleeps, and we have our daughter back again. From the first phone call,  we have found the counselling service excellent and we are so pleased we sent our daughter to Michelle’ (Parent Feedback)

I receive regular clinical supervision to ensure that I am able to provide the best possible support for my client's and to ensure I continue to work ethically, professionally and within my competence. I am DBS checked and insured.

Please don't hesitate to contact me, should you have any questions, I will be glad to help.
