Melanie Wilkinson
About me
I am a Humanistic, Person-centred Counsellor available to cover North Somerset. I work from peaceful rooms located in Weston-super-Mare. I provide a Personal Therapeutic Counselling Service in my work with children, young people & adults, and Couples.
As a committed Therapist I work hard to understand your perspective and the predicament you are experiencing. The private, confidential and safe environment I provide enables you to express feelings, thoughts and attitudes freely, without the fear of being judged.
I believe it is vitally important to establish an understanding and trusting relationship so that you can express your feelings and life to make sense of the present situation. This can enable you to look forward to a better understanding so that you can cope with life.
Training, qualifications & experience
During my training I have worked in organisational settings before establishing my private counselling practice, which is based in Weston-super-Mare.
I also work within secondary schools in North Somerset, counselling students at their schools.
I hold a Higher National Diploma in Counselling Practice. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adhere to their Ethical Framework. I am an Accredited member of NCS (National Counselling Society). As well as private referrals, I receive referrals from Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP), South Glos. Council, Adoption and Care Leavers Association, and from local youth organisations.
I work as an Integrative Counsellor. This means I believe that every individual is unique and by taking this approach I can therefore tailor my practice to my client’s needs.
My initial training in counselling was Humanistic. This means I work in a Person Centred manner and bring in elements of Gestalt, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy and Transactional Analysis (TA).
I begin the counselling by establishing a working relationship so that we can clarify and define problem areas where we can agree to work together.
My work is client led and this enables the client to choose whether to work short term on an immediate issue or longer term on underlying themes.
Integrative counselling is a very empowering process and my aim is to enable your own inner strength so that you can move forward on your own. The therapy is one-to-one and an equal, rather than pupil/teacher relationship.
I regularly attend workshops and training days to keep my experience up to date and because I am interested in any new approaches, and in the field of counselling, in general.
I think it is important for my own personal development to be continuously learning and to be open to new ideas.
Member organisations

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership

Accredited Register Scheme
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
