About me
About me
I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with over twenty five years experience. I am registered by UKCP and the BPS. I provide face to face therapy in Seasalter, Whitstable. I also work with online.
My approach is informed by modern psychoanalytic ideas from the areas of attachment, relational psychotherapy and neuroscience. This approach seeks to understand the underlying reasons for feelings or behaviours that you may be troubled by.
I bring warmth and humanity to my work. My aim is to meet you where you are in seeking to understand the difficulties you are experiencing in your life in the present.
How can psychotherapy help you?
In my practice I aim to provide you with a setting in which you will become secure enough to feel able for us to explore together difficulties you are experiencing in your day to day life. The relationship we create is an important aspect of the work we do in terms of establishing a trusting and non-judgemental space in which we can work together.
The first session
I see the first session as an exploratory time for which I do not charge. It is an opportunity for us both to get a sense of each other. For you to give me a background to what it is that brings you to therapy. An opportunity to think about why you think therapy will help you and what it means to embark on a therapeutic journey. For me, I have an opportunity to gain an insight and some understanding of you as a person - your hopes and your concerns. It is also an opportunity for you to ask me questions about any aspect of working in therapy together.
Clinical Supervision
I have practiced as a clinical supervisor and a trainer of supervision in excess of twenty years. I offer clinical supervision to counsellors and psychotherapists to suit individual practitioner's needs. My approach is psychoanalytic/psychodynamic. I am particularly interested in working with the therapeutic relationship.
Training, qualifications & experience
My early career was as a nurse. I trained in general nursing (SRN), psychiatric nursing (RMN) and as a Health Visitor (HV). I worked in general hospitals, The Bethlem and Maudsley Royal Hospital and as a Health Visitor in kent. I became increasingly interested in the areas of psychiatry as it seemed to me that it was much more difficult to resolve someone's emotional pain than it was to treat a physical condition. I then read psychology at the University of Kent and subsequently trained there as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, which lead to registration with UKCP. As a psychotherapist I have worked in the public and private sectors and was involved in the training of psychotherapists and supervision at Kent for many years.
Member organisations
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.
As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
