About me

My Name is Matt, I am a fully accredited counsellor / psychotherapist currently registered with the BACP. I have been a fully qualified therapist for 5 years. During this time I have developed extensive experience of general counselling, I currently have the privilege of working with Macmillan to offer counselling for people who are experiencing cancer currently or have previously experienced cancer.

How I can help

I will offer you an environment that will allow us to safely explore and work through issues that may be troubling you and your unique experience of the issues. By offering a confidential and non-judgemental service we can work together at your pace and work towards the outcomes you seek.

How I will work with you

As a Person-Centred Psychotherapist, it is not my role to offer you advice or my opinion about what you are experiencing in your life, you may even be at a point where the advice and opinions of others is adding pressure. Instead, my role is to empower you towards your own solutions or decisions by offering you genuine empathy, acceptance and honesty.

You may require a space to work through emotions and feelings that you are unable to express elsewhere such as anxiety, sadness, grief for example. I aim to offer you the necessary conditions to process these feelings in a healthy way.

Training, qualifications & experience

Experience

I have extensive experience working with those suffering with cancer at various stages through my work with Macmillan. Working in this field has provided me with experience in working with those who are dealing with life-critical and life affecting conditions either as a direct result or the cancer or indirectly.

Through my work as a general counsellor for Bupa, I have experience in working with a variety of clients including those suffering with anxiety, depression, low mood, grief, stress and low self-esteem.

I have past experience providing counselling in an IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) counselling service in Greater Manchester. I also have experience providing bereavement counselling for a hospital bereavement centre.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Additional information

Getting started

It can be challenging finding the right counsellor for you because of this I offer an initial phone consultation which can take around 20 minutes - we can use this time to discuss expectations and ensure that we are on the same page to be able to work successfully together.

Please feel free to get in touch with me in which every way suits you best, phone, email or text message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

During the first session, we can explore what you are hoping for and wanting from counselling and from your counsellor. If you are comfortable to continue our sessions we will book in weekly sessions thereafter.

It can be quite daunting deciding on a counsellor and then taking the next step to reach out. That is why I aim to make this process as stress free and inviting for you as possible.

Please do feel free to get in touch to ask any questions or to arrange an initial appointment.

Sessions will be 50 minutes in length.
