Mark Smith MSc (Merit) MBACP, UKCP (Accredited)
Hi, I'm Mark, I practice as a person centred and experiential counsellor within the city of Sheffield. I am accredited with the UKCP, and a member of the BACP.
Working with a person-centred therapist means being alongside someone who will work at your pace, depth, and in the direction of your choosing. The relationship I offer is rooted in compassion, honesty and aims to be free of judgement, whatever you bring to it. As such, it offers you the opportunity to find your own authentic self and way of being in the world at large.
My experience as a whole includes (but is not limited to) working with the issues of bullying, anger, self harm, substance use, divorce and betrayal, difficulties with transition, trauma, anxiety, identity, low mood, confidence and self-esteem, depression, loss and bereavement.
I appreciate that there may be many doubts, fears and questions about counselling – what it feels like, how will you get on with me as your counsellor, what are the pros and cons. Therefore, I offer your first session at a reduced cost, allowing a chance to answer some of these questions.
Training, qualifications & experience
I completed an MSc (with Merit) in Person Centred and Experiential Counselling and Psychotherapy at the Sherwood Psychotherapy Institute in September 2017, and worked as a Registered Mental Nurse within the NHS for 28 years, retiring in April 2019. Alongside this, I work as a counsellor with a staff support service in the NHS, providing short term support for a variety of issues.
Besides my experience as a Registered Mental Nurse and psychotherapist in private practice, I work as a counsellor within the NHS providing psychological support to staff along a wide range of issues, both professional and personal.
I am committed to life long reflexive learning, and regularly update my practice by attendance of workshops and courses. My reading encompasses a wide range of subjects, and reflects my belief that curiosity is fundamental to an enlightened, evidence-based and relevant practice.
Regular clinical supervision helps to ensure that my practice is safe, ethical and as effective as possible, and facilitates the integration of my ongoing experience.

I charge £30 per session for students and those who are unwaged, and £40 for those on a regular salary.
The initial reduced session is £15 for those on the lower rate, £20 for those on a regular wage.
At present, the rooms I use are located at 289 Abbeydale Road, which has wheelchair access and is located on a major bus route. Parking is available on public roads in the area (please note that there are some restrictions on parking on Abbeydale Road itself due to bus lane regulations).
