A Little bit of information about me!
If you are looking for a counsellor or therapist, it is important that you feel comfortable with the person you choose to share your difficulties with. So, I guess you would like to know a little bit about me.
I am in my mid 40's, live in Plymouth and am married with two step daughters. I work in private practice as a counsellor and therapist. I am also course director at Devon and Cornwall Counselling Hub. A private counselling training company. I try and live a healthy life, eat the right things, exercise regularly and I try hard to take care of myself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I love being in nature and particularly enjoy woodlands and the countryside and also really enjoy music and listening to live performers.
I have been working with people for over 20 years and have facilitated many personal and spiritual development groups, courses and workshops. I have an interest in spirituality and how how our beliefs may inform who we are and indeed support us in life. Alongside my counselling and therapy work, I help people to explore their own meaning and direction in life by offering spiritual guidance sessions. I also teach counselling, psychotherapy and supervision.
I came to counselling work as a result of having had a fairly difficult childhood and because I have found that I am naturally very empathic. This means that I have always found that people tell me about their problems and difficulties without any prompting from me and in the most unlikely of situations and places. I have discovered that I have a natural ability to understand where they are coming from and that people feel comfortable talking to me about the most personal of things.
I think that combining my experiences from life with my natural abilities, made counselling and therapy work a natural choice for me. I really enjoy working with people as I have a strong interest in them and a curiosity about what makes us as people who we are. I consider myself fairly accepting of pretty much anything people bring to counselling, there isn't much that I feel uncomfortable with.
I believe that having experienced stress, anxiety, depression and a whole range of other things myself, in the past, puts me in a good position to be able to understand you and what you may be struggling with in life. I have witnessed the amazing and transformational power that counselling and therapy has had on me and my life and am confident that it can be the same for you.
I am told by clients that they enjoy working with me because of my down to earth, empathic and caring approach. I am told that I have a "natural way of being able to draw things out of people"
I am trained in Gestalt counselling but also draw upon a wide range of approaches in my work including Person Centred, Transpersonal and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. I am happy to meet with you for a no obligation initial session so that you can see if my approach and style suit you and if you wish to continue working with me.
I believe that everyone comes to counselling as there is something that is troubling them. With this in mind, I like to identify what it is you want to get out of our work. So, in our initial session, we can spend some time discussing what it is you want to achieve. It may be to simply feel better, feel less anxious or depressed, have better relationships or work through trauma. Whatever you wish to achieve will be discussed to make sure we can work together and that we have a plan of where you want to be. I believe that if we can't see the target, then we are unlikely to hit it.
I am often asked how long it will take. This depends on what you want to achieve. If it is to feel less anxious, then we will probably only need a few sessions. Whereas working through childhood trauma or abuse, could take a lot longer. I am keen to review our work regularly to make sure that what we are doing together suits your needs and feels relevant to what you want to achieve from working with me.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am quallifed and hold a Diploma in Thearapeutic Counselling and a Post Graduate Certificate in Supervision. In experience terms I have worked with people in a therapeutic way for around 20 years. I draw upon a wealth of knowledge, and many skills and understanding which I have gained through my life and through working with people from all walks of life and backgrounds.
The Client's I Work With
My clients are male and female, young and not so young. They are gay and straight, they are British and from other cultural backgrounds. They are able bodied and disabled. I am happy to offer a welcome and open heart to any one from any background.
Relationship and Couples Counselling
I work with couples but do ask that each partner is in personal counselling with a separate therapist during the time that we work together.
Areas of counselling I deal with
- Affairs and betrayals
- Anger management
- Attachment disorder
- Domestic violence
- Emotional abuse
- Family issues
- Low self-confidence
- Low self-esteem
- Physical abuse
- Relationship problems
- Separation and divorce
- Sexual abuse
- Suicidal thoughts
- Work-related stress
Other areas of counselling I deal with
I work with an holistic model, so explore the relationship between mind, body, soul and emotion and how these parts of self may be connected or disconnected. I believe that being disconnected from any part of ourselves can cause emotional and mental difficulties.
Photos & videos
I aim to make counselling accessible to everyone and therefore my fees are, I feel, affordable. From time to time there are some concessionary slots available and so feel free to ask if there are any available at the moment, or to go on the waiting list.
Sessions are £32-£40 (clients pay what they would like to, within this scale) and a little more for relationship counselling.
Supervision for counsellors and therapists is £75 per hour and a half session in both Plymouth and Dartington.
I enjoy working with people from all walks of life and welcome difference and diversity. I have worked with clients as young as eight years old as well as the more mature in our community. I offer an open approach to you and the difference you bring, young or old, male or female, gay or straight, all are welcome.
If you have any questions about me, my work or how I might be able to help you, please give me a ring. I am happy to discuss any aspects of my work or how we might work together on the phone. It is hard to say everything about me and my work in a directory such as this, so I very much welcome your enquires by email or phone and am sure I will be able to answer your questions.
I look forward to sharing your therapuetic journey with you.
