About me

I draw on over 4 decades of clinical experience in private practice and numerous psychotherapy organisations and work therapeutically in a flexible way, learning anew from every client.
I adapt my technique and time-scale according to individual need. Some people want brief psychotherapy; others wish to come once a week for a longer period. With others I work intensively 2-5 times weekly over a number of years.

I am fascinated by the way psychotherapy can radically change our lives and how we feel about ourselves and the world around us. This often means negotiating a new relationship with our past so that we can live more fully in the present. I have long been aware of the effects of trauma in childhood and later life so this understanding is central to my practice. My long and varied experience helps me to understand the causes of client's distress quickly.

I work with any issue that a client brings and do not consider myself a specialist in the sense of working more with some problems rather than others. However I do have particular expertise in working with all aspects of sexuality/intimacy including sexual identity and orientation and have published widely on these and related topics. I am currently writing about social class and cross-cultural issues as well as gender.

If you would like to contact me you can email or phone and I will get back to you as soon as possible. We can then arrange one or more consultations where we can discuss your needs and what you want from psychotherapy. You can then decide whether you wish to continue.

My practice is conveniently located 4 minutes from Stockwell tube where the Victoria and Northern lines can get you quickly into central London and other parts of the city and also on many bus-routes.

My supervisory practice has been running since 1977 and I enjoy working with a wide range of colleagues, including counsellors and psychotherapists of all orientations.

Training, qualifications & experience

Having already trained as a counsellor and worked in the field for 9 years, I completed my training as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with The Guild of Psychotherapists in 1985.

I have always been interested in the way cultural inequities such as those of gender, sexual orientation, race and class are structured into our minds and bodies and how these complex interactions emerge within the therapeutic relationship. This has drawn me to work in a number of pioneering counselling and psychotherapy projects in the public sector, including Battersea Action and Counselling Centre and The Women's Therapy Centre as well as in a wide range of other NHS and voluntary sector settings.

From 1990 -2008 I was a member of the Training Committee of the Guild of Psychotherapists, so have considerable experience of teaching and supervising trainees.
I have also taught and given talks on numerous psychotherapy and counselling courses, at national and international conferences and for the general public.

In my very first counselling post I was expected to supervise others so have 4 decades of experience now in many different settings. This enabled me to design, set up and run the highly successful Guild of Psychotherapists Supervision course for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists from 2009-2012.
