Maria Malone EMDR Trauma & PTSD Specialist & Counselling Supervisor
Welcome to my counselling page; I realise it can be a daunting step starting your search for a therapist and a minefield trying to make sure you pick the right person.
Talking therapies are sought for a variety of reasons. Do you want to develop insight into and change patterns of thinking, feeling and reacting that maintain anxiety, depression, anger or stress? Do you struggle with trauma or addiction, or simply want to transform your relationship with loved ones? Or would you like to make freer choices, increase your self-understanding, unlock your full potential or learn to live in a more empowered, mindful way?
Sometimes unresolved past events - a difficult childhood, a traumatic experience - leave emotional wounds that reactivate under certain conditions. Even small traumas or what seems distressing events can leave us experiencing painful emotions that can cause problems in relationships and in some cases even impact our ability to function in day to day life.
Having found yourself on this website for a therapist you have taken the first step in facing your difficulties. It takes courage to do this but you are not alone, because whether it is me or another therapist, we will be there with you to support you in the experience you are about to embark on.
Please note that I am currently working predominantly with EMDR for trauma focused difficulties. I have limited availability for supervision and counselling/psychotherapy clients. I can offer a range of training courses to health and social care professionals.
I am Maria, I am an experienced counsellor/psychotherapist working with a range of issues including;
- trauma / Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- eating disorders
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

- Low self-esteem

- Hearing voices
- Suicidal thoughts
- Social anxiety

to name a few.
I am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I adhere to the BACP ethical framework and I hold full professional indemnity insurance and an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure certificate. I attend regular supervision to ensure I am practicing ethically and safely and maintaining BACP standards and attend training to remain up to date and continue my professional development. As an Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapist I am a member of the EMDR Association UK and Ireland. I have completed my EMDR training and I’m currently working towards accreditation.
I am passionate about helping people unlock their potential and recover from self-limiting beliefs and distressing experiences. I have a compassionate and collaborative style and I therefore adopt an integrative approach to therapy. This allows clients to explore their thoughts and feelings at their own pace so they can make sense of, and find solutions to their issues in a non-judgemental, safe and confidential setting. It is important to me to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for people who are dealing with personal challenges and to build a comfortable and trusting relationship. I find it is important to offer various ways of working with people as my experiences have shown different people (and problems) benefit from different approaches.
Using a wide range of therapeutic skills, I tailor my approach to meet individual needs, with the aim of achieving greater understanding of the issues you are experiencing and exploring strategies to move forward. These skills come from a variety of different approaches including person-centred counselling, psychotherapy, Transactional Analysis (TA), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness practice.
I have worked with people in a supportive capacity for over 32 years. This experience has come from working in a range of NHS mental health/psychological well-being settings, GP clinics, schools, voluntary organisations, Rape Crisis Centres, drug treatment service (that specialise in counselling and therapeutic group work with children and young people where there was substance misuse within the family which impacted on them). I have also worked for ISAS an organisation specialising in counselling for Incest and Sexual Abuse Survivors and their families; for Charlottes Rainbow a Bereavement Project for children offering group work and one to one work; Children’s social care and private practice counselling.
I believe everyone has the potential to move towards being an integrated, complete person and the first step in doing this is developing insight and understanding of the problem, whatever it is. From there, I will work alongside you to develop a tailored approach that will harness your strengths and give you the best chance to gain mastery over your mind, and therefore your life.
Currently, I am working in my private practice and for the NHS in Primary Care Mental Health, (Psychological Wellbeing Service (PWS) previously known as IAPT Huntingdon at Step 3) with clients with common mental health issues and those experiencing effects of trauma. My private consulting rooms are based in Huntingdon and surrounding areas.
I have experience in long-term and short-term work with individuals, couples and group work. I work with adults, children and young people and I have a diverse range of clients from all walks of life.
I also provide clinical supervision for counsellors, psychotherapists and professionals working in the "caring professions". This can again be face 2 face or online via an online service such as Skype.

M Malone Counselling
Making that initial call to a therapist is a big step and can cause a lot of anxiety and apprehension. You can contact me by calling, text or email. I endeavour to respond within 24hrs. I will respond by calling so we can talk through what you want to gain from therapy and it gives you an opportunity to see if I'm the right fit for you.
Following our telephone consultation, if you are comfortable with me, we will book a face to face assessment and begin our work together. Your first session will be an initial assessment session; this will be for 1 hour. This session will give us the opportunity to discuss what issues have brought you to therapy and what your expectations of therapy are. We will discuss the counselling contract on how I will provide my services and the expectations of you in our work. We will discuss the number and frequency of sessions, how any fees will be paid, what happens if you miss a session or are away on holiday and I will also explain Confidentiality and note taking. You will also have an opportunity to ask me any questions you may have.
Choosing a therapist is an important step and this will give you the chance to decide if you are happy to work with me. If we both feel we connect and can work together, then we can arrange weekly sessions (recommended for continuity and consistency).
Each therapy session lasts 50 minutes. If you require a different frequency of sessions, other than weekly, this can be discussed at the assessment session. It is also important to say if you can’t work with me as it needs to feel right for you.
I offer an LGBTQI friendly service.
I am committed to anti-discriminatory and equal opportunity practices and see this as integral to the way I work.
