About me

Welcome, I'm Maria

I offer a warm, accepting and collaborative approach to my counselling work with adults - providing sessions in person, online or by phone for as long as is needed.

My approach draws on Humanistic theories and holds the counselling relationship at its heart. Humanistic ideas focus on you as a unique individual, respecting your experiences of the world and acknowledging the resources within you. Each of us holds the potential to shape our lives.

Together, at your pace, we can explore what troubles you and understand the impact of this on your life.  We can bring focus to what is important to you with the aim of providing new insights and choices for a more settled and fulfilled way ahead.

I am interested in utilising the wisdom of our bodies within the counselling process. Tensions and traumas held inside us give an important guide to our emotional world. I understand the benefits gained from the use of mindfulness and breathing techniques in supporting our resilience and offer this where appropriate.

I have 25 years experience of working with adults and young people. Initially, this was in the education sector and later working with charities supporting people who had experienced domestic abuse. I continue to have an interest in this area of work. I qualified as a counsellor in 2008 taking on my first counselling role in 2011.

I am a registered member of BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and my work is guided by the ethics and standards recommended by the organisation. I have been a counsellor for 12 years working in both private practice and within charity settings.

My experience includes the following areas.....

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Low self -esteem
  • Relational difficulties
  • Loss of confidence
  • Stress
  • Grief and loss
  • Life transitions
  • Emotional, physical and sexual abuse
  • Creative counselling
  • Mindfulness

Next steps…

There is no commitment to continue with sessions if you feel we are not a good fit.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
