Maite Berndes, MBACP & Reiki Practitioner
I work in private practice and offer a safe, confidential, non-judgemental space to my clients where issues can be discussed and explored. I have experience of working with clients on a range of issues:
- bereavement and loss
- anxiety and stress
- relationship issues
- low self-esteem
- amongst others.
I respect that each person is an individual with their own unique experiences and problems. I work psycho-dynamically and believe that childhood experiences and early relationships impact on the present, even though this may be outside the awareness of the client, in other words, it is unconscious. Therapy helps bring these unconscious issues into the conscious with the aim of giving you greater personal awareness and understanding, and therefore, more control over your emotions and life.
In addition to my private practice, I have been working at a bereavement charity for the past 7 years. I am a Registered Member of BACP (British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists) and I abide by their Code of Ethics.
I am also a Reiki Practioner. Reiki is a non-invasive form of energy healing. I offer Reiki from my Barnet practice. I charge £40 for a Reiki session which lasts one hour.
There is free, off street parking outside my practice In new Barnet. The nearest rail station is New Barnet (10 minute walk) and the nearest tube stations are Cockfosters on the Piccadilly Line (20 minute walk or short bus ride) and High Barnet on the Northern Line (30 minute walk or short bus ride).
What to Expect from a Therapy Session
An initial assessment is set up, during this session we would discuss the issues that you are currently experiencing. The initial assessment usually takes 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes. Following on from the initial assessment, we would set up a regular, once a week, time and day for on-going therapy. Each session lasts 50 minutes.
A therapist will not push you to talk about things that you feel uncomfortable about, however sometimes painful memories do come up and when they do the best place to explore them is with a qualified therapist.
Many people ask "How many sessions will I need?", this is not an easy question to answer and it is dependent on the issues and how the therapy develops, however you can expect to continuously review where you are with the therapy.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
