Dr M. H. Louise Ivinson MB ChB MRCPsych (retd). SENIOR COUPLE THERAPIST.

I am a medically qualified Psychotherapist with nearly 30 years experience. I qualified as a Doctor in 1984 and worked in the NHS as a Psychiatrist and then as a Consultant Psychotherapist. A particular area of clinical expertise is Couple Therapy.
I established the first NHS Couple Therapy services in Cumbria and subsequently North Manchester, where I worked as Consultant Psychotherapist. I developed a supervision group for clinicians working with couples, including Relate Counsellors.
I have worked with couples facing a wide range of difficulties, across the lifespan, from infertility, child bereavement, separation, divorce, infidelity and also illness including dementia. I have offered therapy to couples during acute crises as well as those with enduring relationship difficulties. I provide a safe, therapeutic space for couples to think and talk and move towards a better understanding of their difficulties, with the aim of alleviating their distress.
I work from a discreet and purpose-built consulting room in south Manchester.
Training, qualifications & experience
I graduated in medicine from the University of Dundee in 1984.
I worked as a Consultant Psychotherapist in the NHS offering Individual, Group and Couple Therapy. I have supervised Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Psychotherapists and other NHS clinicians.
I qualified as a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1989 and continue as a retired member.
I went on to complete a 5 year training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy whilst working in the NHS Psychotherapy Department in Newcastle upon Tyne.
I am a full member of the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and the Scottish Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (SAPP).
My interest in Couple Therapy started over 25 years ago when I was part of a team which established an innovative NHS Couple Therapy service based upon the theoretical and clinical model of the Tavistock Clinic in London. As Consultant Psychotherapist in the NHS, I went on to develop similar services for couples in Cumbria and later in north Manchester. I continue to work with couples in my private practice in south Manchester.
