Hello, I am Louise.
I am a Play therapist with 15 years of experience. I work mainly with children between 3 and 13 years old using a range of play resources, toys, sand, paint, stories, slime etc. to help children express themselves.
I am very privileged to work with these children and recognise the trust parents and carers are putting in me; not easy when you are worried about them.
I use play with children as it is their own natural medium of expression, exploring and learning. Talking may be too painful or difficult for children who struggle to put their feelings into words; Play Therapy can allow children to explore and understand their feelings, this can allow children to shift their perspective, increase self esteem and feel more empowered.
I usually travel to children in schools, their home or other space eg. Children's Centres. I use myself, my toy box and a special mat to create a safe space where feelings can be contained and explored. I work in a child centred manner which is mostly non- directive creating narratives and metaphors together with the child. This can enable him or her discover a more hopeful view of the world.
Play Therapy is appropriate for children from different cultures, genders and abilities.
I am also trained as a Filial therapist. Filial therapy teaches parents or significant carers to offer their child special play times, they become the change agent for their child. This is especially helpful if working with attachment issues
I have trained to work with my Chocolate Labrador, Malty. We offer Animal Assisted Play Therapy. This can be useful for many children but especially those who have difficulty forming social relationships and those who find it hard to stay focussed or conform within school situations
I like to work together with parents, schools and any other involved agency, although the actual work with the child is confidential.
I work locally on Wed, Th and Fri. I sometimes work on a Saturday if also working with parents or carers.
Training, qualifications & experience
As well as being a Play Therapist I am a teacher.
I hold a Cert Ed and a MEd and taught for 25 years before training on a BAPT course at Roehampton to obtain my Post Graduate Diploma in Play Therapy. I was very fortunate to be on of the last cohorts trained by Ann Cattanach, renowned course director and author.
Since graduating in 2003 I have continued my play therapy education studying Filial Play therapy with Rise Van Fleet in 2004, who also runs the Animal Assisted Therapy course completed in 2011.
In my practice I have worked in schools, with CAMHS, and with Looked After or Adopted Children.
