Lorraine Thomas - BSc (Hons) Creative and Expressive Arts in Therapy
Please note that during the Coronavirus pandemic I am offering online and telephone sessions to support you with whatever you're going through, whether that be existing problems or new challenges arising from the current situation.
Thank you for taking the time to read my profile.
I am an Integrative Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor registered and Accredited with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I have worked in the Education, NHS and Third sectors for over 17 years working either with children and young people or with adults, family constellations or groups. I work in a down-to-earth, client centred way integrating a range of psychotherapeutic methods and interventions depending on the needs and preferred ways of working with each client. My theoretical model has evolved as an integrative approach drawing from evidence based perspectives. Integrative Counselling simply means that I am able to choose aspects from a range of theoretical models and integrate them into a single approach. This allows me to be flexible and creative in my practice and tailor my work to the needs of each client using a diverse range of skills. My practice encompasses both the talking and or creative art therapies, where appropriate, believing thoroughly in their efficacy. The best effects in therapy rely on the relationship that develops and the work that is visited between therapist and client. In order to achieve this, I offer a warm, empathic and confidential service to children, young people and adults who may be experiencing a range of difficulties and challenges in their lives
I currently work for a national Children’s Society in Torquay as the Manager of a Wellbeing Service for Children and Young People and have my own private practice as a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor. I am committed to my own Continuing Professional Development and aim to ensure that my knowledge and skills are up to date to ensure best practice professionally. I have worked with clients throughout a wide range of ages, ethnicities and cultures, and these experiences have given me the tools to communicate with people and help them to explore a whole range of issues that affect their lives.
I abide by the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in counselling, and I am also a member of their children and young people’s division. You can see my registration and accreditation details here: https://bacp.co.uk/
Counselling/psychotherapy can help if you are experiencing difficulties or challenges in your life, it may help to identify unhelpful patterns of thoughts, feelings or behaviours that you may wish to explore and possibly change. Through the work that we do together, we may be able to find more helpful coping strategies. Counselling/psychotherapy can help a person gain a fresh perspective, deeper understanding of themselves or feel better about themselves or the situation they are in and to live feeling more fulfilled and positive about life. I can offer you a warm, caring, compassionate and confidential space in which to talk about and explore these issues.
Children and Young People
I have much experience in working with children and young people of all ages and employ a variety of therapeutic interventions dependent upon the needs of each client. For younger children or those seeking a more creative way of working, I utilise my experience with the creative and expressive arts using materials such as clay, paint and play therapy. My aim is to work with each unique person building a relationship of trust. This will enable them to feel safe enough to explore whatever they wish in order to help them understand their worries and concerns and make sense of and where appropriate to make changes in their worlds. Sometimes when working with children and young people it can really help if I can work directly with parents or carers.
I hold an Enhanced DBS check and attend regular safeguarding training to ensure your protection. I am committed to Continuing Professional Development and regular Clinical Supervision to ensure that I am constantly learning, keeping up to date with the latest developments and research and to ensure I am practicing safely and ethically.
We will arrange a mutually convenient appointment to discuss your needs and decide if we want to work together and then if we are both in agreement; arrange a follow on appointment to complete a full assessment. We will agree on the terms and confidentiality during our first meeting.
I offer individual, group and clinical supervision usually in person, although telephone or online platforms such as Skype is preferable during the current pandemic. I provide Supervision based around the Hawkins and Shohet Seven Eyed Model. This model ensures that all aspects of the client/counsellor/supervisor relationships are examined, including any organisational context for either counsellor or supervisor.
If you have any further questions or wish to make an initial appointment, please contact me. All information you share with me is confidential.

Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Accredited Register Scheme
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
