About me

If you've found yourself here, then you may be experiencing difficulties, feel you have lost your way in life, a relationship problem, feeling overwhelmed with family or work stresses or maybe past events or trauma being inexplicably triggered in the present.  The pandemic on top of existing concerns might be proving too much to cope with.

I can help you find a way through. Whether it is with depression, anxiety, sleep issues, overwhelming emotions, relationship issues or to help make sense of the past; together, with my skills and knowledge we can work on finding a way forward in a private and confidential space. In counselling, the working relationship is key and I provide a space for a trusting relationship to build for you to be able to discover what you need to begin to heal. For NHS staff looking into therapy it might help to know of my NHS work supporting front-line staff and patients providing me with a unique appreciation of some of what you may experience day-to-day.

I work face-to face in a quiet and comfortable outbuilding at my private premises. I am able to offer the alternative of online and telephone sessions, along with walk and talk therapy.

My Integrative Practice. I trained as an Integrative Counsellor which essentially means integrating different theories, techniques and skills into my practice through in-depth training together with continued professional development and exploration of my own self to be able to welcome and view the client as a whole person tailoring the therapy to the client and not the client to the therapy. My integrative training had a Psychodynamic focus where the past can be explored to help provide clues on the present. I have a keen interest in the Transpersonal which looks at the development of the individual beyond the personal; the spiritual element of being. I have also found that working with the Inner Child can begin to provide inner healing of childhood wounds and trauma providing relief from depression and anxiety. I find the key elements of Person Centred Theory i.e. Unconditional Positive Regard, Empathy and Congruence, underpinning my work so believing in the individual's ability to work towards their full potential. Where appropriate, I like to offer the use of art, visualisation, working with images and objects, and working with the body to help provide insight and understanding into issues which initially seem unclear. My personal interest in Mindfulness sometimes enters into my practice as appropriate or when the client expresses an interest where it can benefit in helping with stress and anxiety.

The Counselling Relationship and what I can offer. I believe building a trusting relationship and working creatively together can help provide understanding and perhaps give insight into concerns moving towards discovery of what it is that's needed at this time from resources within one's self. I offer face-to-face and online counselling both short and long term for adults. Counselling sessions are 1 hour and ideally take place weekly; this helps with consistency and continuity and to help build a full picture. I consider short term to be around 6 sessions and we would have opportunity to review and agree on a possible way forward as would be the case during longer term therapy which would suit more in-depth issues.

Entering into counselling is an important decision so I feel it is vital for us both to feel that we can work together and for you to feel cared for and supported to begin the work. This is something we can explore in the initial session and of course if you feel I am not what you are looking for then you are under no obligation to continue counselling.

As a Counsellor,  my practice began working for a national cancer charity in a major NHS Essex hospital; I role I held for nearly 8 years which included counselling outpatients, inpatients, and their families, facilitating staff training, providing workshops and courses for patients and families, facilitating critical incident debriefs, supervising clinical nurse specialists and providing support for front-line staff and inpatients through the COVID-19 pandemic. Alongside this I have worked as a schools Counsellor and with a regional cancer charity. Established in 2017, I now work solely from my private practice.

I work with others through issues around bereavement, loss, mental health, BPD/EUPD, self harming behaviours, depression, PND, anxiety, PTSD, work related stress, loss of purpose/goals and direction in life, sexual issues, sexual identity, trauma, physical/emotional and sexual abuse, childhood issues, relationships, cancer and life limiting illness.

I also supported bereaved adults and children in local hospices over a 5 year period and provided support for deaf and hearing adults with learning difficulties in the community. I am deaf aware and have a BSL level 1.

Before training as a Counsellor my work was in the public and private sectors working in community health, children's centres and privately with parents and babies-to-pre-school children providing early years services for over 10 years.

Prior to this, I worked in a very different field; Engineering, in the Automotive, Petrochemical and Defense industries which provided me with opportunity for travel across Europe.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
