Lisa Hindmarsh (Body-Mind Integrated Counsellor)

About me

L J Therapeutics is a private practice, specialising in Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder; Vicarious Trauma; Compassion Fatigue; Burnout; and Stress Management, and is located in the town of Wilmslow, Cheshire, on the edge of the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District, in the north-west of England. The practice provides somatic Body-mind Integrated Counselling; Solution Focused Brief Coaching; Therapeutic Affective Touch Therapy, and offers a fresh, dynamic, bold and contemporary style to helping that can empower you to realise your aspirations; rediscover and revitalise your existing strengths and capabilities; and can lead you to self-awareness, self-knowledge, and a brighter, more fulfilled future.

With over 25 years of experience of working within the physical complementary therapy professions, the relaunched practice embraces the practitioner’s very extensive knowledge of bodywork, with Polyvagal Theory, neurophysiology, and neuropsychology, and integrates them into a genuinely robust holistic approach to the psychological therapies. At the heart of the practice, you will find a practical and proactive professional, who is compassionate, fun, positive, open, honest, and (when needed) straight talking, and who can quickly establish a rapport with people of all ages and at all levels, creating respectful and mutually trustful relationships.

The practitioner works with your whole being – the spiritual; emotional; psychological; intellectual, and physical – for a truly beautiful symbiotic experience. Working with the practitioner means to acknowledge that as human beings we do not function in a vacuum, both within ourselves and within the world around us. Working with the practitioner means to be stimulated to feel the unfeelable; to think the unthinkable; and to speak the unspeakable, whilst at the same time being supported in a connected, healing, and safe space. The essence of the practitioner’s therapeutic work is to help you to reconnect with yourself and your inner compass – teaching you to feel with your body, rather than feel with your mind. Good psychological health and wellbeing is about understanding, (re)connecting, and engaging with our own unique emotions and feelings, allowing each and every one of us to understand our own mental health and our own human behaviour, and how the one impacts on the other. People who are in mental distress avoid their innate, intuitive, and insightful feelings and emotions because of fear or misunderstanding. This can lead to a disconnect, making us feel alone, afraid, and isolated, not only from ourselves and our own immediate world, but from other human beings and the wider world. When we feel this way, it is the body’s way of communicating its upset and distress, and we must listen closely, attending to those messages with care, love, and compassion. It is only then that we can reawaken, revitalise and renew our Self, our own beautiful world, and the wonderful world around us, living the life we truly want for ourselves with inner peace and delight.

Body-mind Integrated Counselling: (£60 per session; up to 60 minutes per session; face-to-face only).

How are you feeling…? A simple enough question… or is it? Do you feel at peace with your Self, your world, and the world around you? Do you feel on edge, slightly panicked, like you want to run from something but you don’t know what? Do you feel flat, closed down, paralysed, unable to move, wanting to curl up under the duvet and not come out?

Our body can give us multiple clues as to how we are truly feeling on an emotional and psychological level. A person’s thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs can be visible to us through our body’s physical functioning – through our facial expressions, our posture, our body language, our everyday movements, our voice and speech, and how we connect to others. A severely distressing event can cause psychological trauma which can cause damage to the psyche. These events/traumas can disrupt the autonomic nervous system leading to such issues as bodily pain, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, sexual dysfunction, immune system dysfunction, medically unexplained symptoms, anxiety, burnout, primary/secondary traumatic stress, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

The goal of body-mind integrated counselling is to help you to somatic awareness, by tapping into the sensations of energy flowing through the body, utilising the body’s innate intelligence, encouraging both body and mind to work together to heal the whole being. The practitioner can utilise a wide variety of tools to help free the body from the stress and pain that prevents you from fully engaging in your life, including breathing techniques; relaxation techniques; meditation; movement; touch; visualisations; play; music; and voice work.

Therapeutic Affective Touch Therapy: (£110 per session; up to 60 minutes per session; face-to-face only).

Touch is innate. As a newborn, it is the first sense we develop and it remains emotionally central to each and every one of us throughout our lives. Touch plays a vital role in our physiological and psychological wellbeing. Yet in today’s society we are becoming increasingly touch-deprived and less tactile than ever before. Touch stimulates the body’s natural healing processes. It helps to relax; reduce pain; reduce our anxieties; promote wound healing, both physically and psychologically; it increases our natural immunity; it calms cardiovascular stress, decreasing levels of cortisol in the body; it releases our natural ‘feel good’ antidepressants such as dopamine, serotonin and the ‘love hormone’ oxytocin. These hormones, in turn, help us to feel trust, safety, compassion, gratitude, love, and empathy. To deny ourselves touch, is to deprive ourselves of a life full of wonderful experiences of comfort and joy.

Therapeutic affective touch is a bold and contemporary therapy.  The service is designed for those who have no or very little touch in their lives. Perhaps you are bereaved; perhaps you have no close companion in your life. Perhaps you have a special person in your life, but for reasons of disability or an inability to be intimate, you do not receive the touch you need for yourself and your health and wellbeing.  The therapy is a nurturing, caring, heart-centred therapy which can stimulate warmth, connection, spiritual and personal growth, and is the ultimate in self-care for robust health and wellbeing.

Solution Focused Brief Coaching: (£150 per session; up to 60 minutes per session; face-to-face and limited telephone sessions available).

Do you need a boost of energy to feel confident and strong enough to nourish and transform your life?  Do you desire to live your dream through an authentic Self, striving for personal achievement and contentment?  Do you want to feel energised, excited and inspired for the life you want for yourself but struggle for a sense of direction or focus?  Are you failing to thrive, lacking in positivity, motivation, and courage?  If you recognise any of the above, perhaps you have acknowledged that now is the time to take action to realise your true potential, nurture your mind, body, and spirit, and embrace your individual wellbeing, supported by a robust and resilient You.

Solution Focused Brief Coaching can enable you to build change into your life in the shortest possible time.  This change comes from you exploring, in detail, your preferred future, as well as examining and detailing what resources and skills are already contributing to that preferred future.  Each session is designed to be a single, complete session, as though it may be the one and only coaching session you undertake, thus it utilises the coaching process in a very efficient way.  This therapeutic ‘brief encounter’ can have a beautiful positive impact on you and your life, starting a ripple effect, which may last a whole lifetime.
