About me

I am a qualified psychodynamic counsellor and psychoanalytic psychotherapist with 12 years experience, working both within an agency setting and in private practice. I have also worked for 7 years as an honorary psychotherapist in an NHS psychotherapy unit and currently work at a children's charity with the parents of children with emotional and behavioural difficulties.

My core training has been in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic counselling and psychotherapy. This approach sees the mind as a dynamic system, which is often in conflict, and the impact on our mind of the way we have been related to in the past can trigger feelings, thoughts and behaviours in the present, which can cause us a great deal of upset and emotional difficulty. Over the years I have encountered and worked with most of the causes and effects of emotional distress, including depression, grief, anger issues, anxiety and panic states, relationship and sexual problems, eating disorders, bullying/abuse and self harm.

My current way of working involves “empathic attunement” – enabling my clients to feel listened to, understood and affirmed in a way they often weren’t in childhood. Many of us have a sense of self that is fragile, because when we were upset or afraid, our parents or carers were unable to regulate our feelings and either ignored, shamed or punished us, leaving us thinking that there was something wrong with us and our feelings, and leaving us more inclined to keep things to ourselves and sort things out on our own when we were worried upset or frightened, rather than turn to others for help. I work with both individual clients and couples and offer a short 16 session form of dynamic interpersonal therapy which is particularly suitable for clients experiencing an episode of depression and/or anxiety.

I also teach on a BACP accredited psychodynamic counselling diploma course, which allows me to stay in touch with new therapeutic developments and techniques.

If you feel I may be able to help you, please feel free to contact me for more information.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
