If you're tired of using alcohol or other substances to cope with life's difficulties, anxiety and stress, you're not alone. There are many reasons that we use substances or even behaviours to try to change the way we feel and deal with painful emotions.
Perhaps you once felt in control of your use and now it feel like it's in control of you. You might be noticing problems in your relationships, work, health and finances and feel overwhelmed. I will work with you to understand your relationship with alcohol or substances and the role they have in your life.
Everyone's story is different and often the root of our behaviour lies in the past. I will work with you to explore the origins of unhelpful patterns of behaviour and relating to others, unresolved emotional trauma, and feelings of anxiety and depression.
I also work with people who are affected by another person’s addictive behaviour or use of substances. It might be that you’re currently supporting someone and feel isolated, anxious or helpless. Or, it might be that you’ve been affected by someone else’s behaviour in your childhood, and have a sense of carrying the impact of this with you through life.
Perhaps you're feeling isolated and lonely and not sure where to start. It’s not always easy facing this on your own, and asking for support can feel like a big step. My practice is a supportive, confidential and compassionate space for you to explore whatever it is you're going through.

Training, qualifications & experience
I trained for 4 years in counselling and psychotherapy with Physis Scotland in Edinburgh, and I have a post-graduate diploma in counselling using Transactional Analysis. I use an integrated approach to counselling and combine techniques from Transactional Analysis, Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to promote self-discovery and healing.
I also work in a recovery service supporting people with problem substance use, and I volunteer with a local counselling service.
I'm a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, and a member of the Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals. I work within the ethical codes of these professional bodies.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Accredited Register Scheme
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
