Creative Therapy Southwest (Lia Ponton, MA, EATcert.)
Hello, my name is Lia Ponton. I offer a creative therapy approach which is safe, non-intrusive and non-judgemental. If you would like to work outside in nature... or just 'outside the box', then I might be able to help. I work in private woodland near Newton Abbot and in studio space in South Devon. I am trained in Environmental Arts Therapy and Dramatherapy and am registerred with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC).
There are lots of reasons why you might be seeking therapy. You have taken an important first step by accessing this site. However you are, whatever has brought you here.... Welcome.
There are also lots of therapists and different kinds of therapy out there. I offer something a little bit different and I hope that you find what you need on this site to make a decision about whether you would like to explore working with me. If you prefer or have any questions, please call me directly on 07570 759 997 or visit my website www.creativetherapysouthwest.co.uk
Coming to see me...
Initially, all sessions will focus on building trust between us, setting up a therapeutic contract, deciding on the boundaries of the work and exploring where you hope your therapeutic journey will take you. We can have an introductory meeting to establish whether we feel it is right to work together.
What can you expect from a creative approach?
Sometimes we are not ready "to talk about it", or perhaps we have done lots of "talking about it". Sometimes, we want to talk, but we might also want to move, or draw, make something or sit under an old oak tree in order to understand our experiences better.
This opportunity for discovering different ways of expressing ourselves is at the heart of a creative approach. You do not need to consider yourself a creative person to experience the benefits of working creatively. We will work at your pace; allowing your intuition, thoughts, feelings and insights to guide the way.
EarthWays: Environmental Arts Therapy
Working in nature has many benefits and recent studies have proven how just being outside can have a calming effect on us. Nature acts as an additional witness to our experience and provides us with an unlimited pallet to create art with.
Sessions take place in private woodland a few minutes drive from Newton Abbot. There is parking, basic facilities and a place of shelter for inclement weather (though I am happy to work outside in all weathers).
The sessions will be led by you, and guided by what we find in the environment. I will simply invite you to decide how we will move about or be still in the woods or meadow. I will ask: “How are you?” and help you to notice what nature offers as a guide or support... This could be anything; perhaps...
- The visitation of a squirrel inviting you to play
- The call of an owl echoing your wisdom
- A deep pool of water that reflects the depth of your sorrow
- A brightly coloured fungus showing that there is unexpected beauty everywhere
We will explore the wildness together and engage with it spontaneously and creatively.
These sessions are extended (1.5hrs-2hrs long) to allow things to develop at a gentle pace that is responsive to what we find... However, I am flexible and happy to discuss your needs and adapt according to your circumstances.

The arts therapies provide a non-intrusive way of engaging with vulnerable children and young people, helping them to cope with life challenges, build resilience and self esteem, and gain confidence.
Dramatherapy can be a particularly appropriate therapy for children as it is playful and creative and can allow the child to communicate in his or her own language. My approach offers a safe space where the child's personal expression can be uncovered, discovered and explored alongside the therapist as a supportive and accepting adult.
"Dramatherapy was amazing; it helped me to talk to people. It has been fun." (B, 6 years-old)
My work with children is always child-led and often includes:
- embodied and sensory experiencing (e.g. with clay, water, natural objects, smells, sand...)
- projective play using objects, puppets, toys etc.
- story-telling and story enactment
We work using a variety of creative methods, using the tools that feel right for you and enable you to express yourself and find meaning for your life. I use a range of approaches in my dramatherapy work, including role-play, embodied and sensory experiencing, movement, music and dance, art-making, story-telling and story-making, and projective play using objects. You do not need to have any previous experience or skill in acting, theatre or drama.
If you are interested in dramatherapy, we can arrange an introductory session where we can meet and establish whether it feels right for us to work together. Contact me on 07570 759 997.
