About me

From time to time, many of us will be presented with either a life event, or something happening from within that affects the way we think and feel.  At those times, exploring what is happening can be helpful.

Sometimes you may find that you can become 'bogged down' with problems, feeling 'stuck' and not able to see a way out; solution focused sessions can help you identify your best hopes, working together towards your preferred future.

I am a highly experienced accredited BACP registered counsellor/ psychotherapist,  EMDR practitioner (working towards accreditation with EMDR Europe) and sleep practitioner. Throughout our sessions I will be alongside you as you make sense of what is happening, before coming to some sort of resolution.

I offer both short term counselling and brief solution focused therapy (up to 6 sessions); longer term counselling/ psychotherapy, and / or EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Re-processing) based upon your needs.

Throughout our sessions together I will endeavour to provide you with a safe 'containing' space, where you do not feel judged, no matter what issues you bring to counselling.

I have over 20 years experience of working with clients with a range of presenting issues including anxiety, low mood and depression, low self-esteem, complex bereavement; including those bereaved by the death of a child (including miscarriage, medical termination and still birth) and those bereaved by murder or suicide; clients with eating disorders, trauma work (including post-traumatic stress disorder), obsessive compulsive behaviour, self- harm and suicidal thoughts.

In addition to my private practice, I work as a counsellor in a specialist service offering bereavement counselling and interventions to anyone impacted by the death of a child, however old, from conception onwards; however recent or long ago.

I have extensive experience within Child and Adolescent Mental Health for 20 years; working systemically with children, young people and their families. I have extensive experience of working therapeutically both face to face and on-line with individuals (both children and adults) with learning disabilities and individuals with developmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Conditions (including Asperger's Syndrome).  This can relate to issues of diagnosis and what this means for you or about adapting my work to meet your needs.

After your Initial assessment session, we will contract to meet for a series of sessions (usually between 4 and 6), after which we can review whether you would like sessions to continue.

I work from a fully accessible therapy centre in Bromborough, Wirral. On your first session I will meet you at the reception area to ensure confidentiality.

Please feel free to contact me either by telephone  on 07813771731 or email  to discuss whether I can help . I may not be able to respond to you immediately, but will endeavour to respond within 12 hours of your initial inquiry.  I am registered on linkedin.com and my profile can be accessed here: www.linkedin.com/in/lesley-dougan-reg-mbacp-accred-90911225

Training, qualifications & experience

Having worked in the mental health profession for 20 years; much of my knowledge and experience has be gained first hand from working therapeutically with individuals.  However, I also recognise it is essential for my knowledge to remain up to date.

I hold a Research Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Practice and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (accredited by the BACP) from Liverpool John Moores University. I am currently studying towards a Doctorate in Counselling and Psychotherapy and Psychological Trauma with Chester University.

I am an EMDR (Eye movement desensitisation and re-processing) practitioner; working towards becoming accredited by EMDR Europe.
EMDR is an evidence-based psychotherapy for trauma but is also highly effective with other presenting issues such as anxiety and phobias. It is an approach that emphasises the brain's information processing system and memories of disturbing experiences (see http://www.emdr-europe.org/ for more information).

I am an accredited, registered member of BACP as a Counsellor/ Psychotherapist adhering to the BACP Ethical Framework for Counselling Professions (2016).

In addition, I hold a certificate in solution focused practice, awarded by BRIEF, one of the leading organisations in solution focused therapy in the UK and a certificate in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

I have additional post-graduate qualifications in Autism Spectrum Conditions, Special Educational Needs and Psychology, enabling me to specialise in working with individuals with additional needs.

I am a qualified sleep practitioner and recognise the impact poor sleep can have on an individual's emotional well-being and vice versa - I am able to work alongside you in a solution focused way to identify the source of your sleep issues and to develop a plan to effectively manage and work towards improving your sleep.

As a person with a facial difference myself, I have experience in counselling individuals around issues of different appearance, particularly facial difference.

I have successfully completed additional training in:

  • eating disorders
  • pre-therapy
  • the psychological impact of disfigurement
  • dialectical behaviour therapy
  • brief advice and intervention (drug and alcohol issues)
