Dr Kornilia Givissi, Chartered Counselling Psychologist CPsychol, HCPC Reg
Welcome to my page and thank you for your interest in working with me. Starting therapy can be daunting experience, whether it is your first time or have worked with someone else before and asking questions is a necessary part of finding the right match for you. Below I explain briefly some of the main characteristics of my work and please feel free to contact me if there is anything else you would like to know.
I work with clients with a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, low mood, mood swings, self-harm, medically unexplained aches and pains, relational and interpersonal problems and life transition. I do have a special interest in self-harm, in particular in formats that damage the skin. Additionally, I welcome clients who wish to work on experiences of changing country, living in a different culture to the one they were born in or living and working in a second language. I am particularly interested in language, the words we use to describe emotion or to talk to ourselves, as well as the bodily experience of emotion.
My training in Psychology means that I can draw from a number of different modalities, such as psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural and humanistic, and offer an integrative approach to my clients. In practice, this means that I will tailor my approach to each client and offer an individualised therapeutic experience.
If you are interested in therapy, send me an email or give me a call. If I am unable to answer, please leave me a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible. I aim to respond within 24 hours.
The first appointment will be a consultation, to discuss your needs and how I can best help you. Following from that, we can decide together whether we continue or explore other options for you.
I usually work in an open ended way (meaning there is not a predefined number of sessions) with once weekly appointments, however depending on the outcome of the consultation we might agree on a certain number of sessions to work towards.
Sessions last for 50 minutes and are scheduled at the same time and day every week. This means that when we work together, you will have a slot reserved. I offer lunchtime, afternoon and evening slots.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have trained as a Clinical Psychologist in Greece and as a Counselling Psychologist in the UK.
I have extensive experience working with a variety of clients in diverse settings, such as addiction treatment services, local GP practices, private psychiatric units, the NHS and the charity sector.
I am the Director of Psychological Therapies and Wellbeing Services at Mind in the City, Hackney and Waltham Forest, one of the largest local Mind associations, managing a multidisciplinary team. I am also a Visiting Lecturer and Research Supervisor at City, University of London and Regents University and have a deep interest in research, particularly in areas regarding body image, sense of self, embodiment and self harm.
