A little bit about me and what I do....
I'm a BACP registered Psychotherapist and Counsellor. I work with Children, Adolescents, Adults and also offer support to families. I've worked in the field for 6 years and have worked with the NHS, for charities and also as Clinical Lead managing a service in the North East.
My background is in Psychology. Whilst I am passionate about research in the field and best practice, I am also a warm, approachable practitioner who is able to put prospective clients at ease. I understand how daunting coming to see a Counsellor or therapist can be - and how overwhelming the choice is. From the first call and through all of the sessions you will be made to feel comfortable and at ease- I believe that the relationship between the client and the therapist is one of the most important parts of the work.
What Happens when I make contact ?
The counselling or Psychotherapy process should feel comfortable, when you first make contact I will take you through the location and appointment time options, I will also take a small amount of information about the issues that bring you to counselling.
At the first face to face meeting we will spend some time talking through how the process works, taking a more in depth history and planning the work we will do together. The first session will also include your chance to ask questions and find out of Counselling or Psychotherapy is right for you. It can be reassuring to know that many of my clients have found the first steps to making contact the most daunting, often having kept issues to themselves or pushed through their distress, once contact is made and you realise that you are in safe experienced hands things can start to feel easier.
What Types of Therapy do you offer?
There are many different types of therapies available and its important to find the best fit for you. I'm an Integrative practitioner - that means that I take the best, most evidenced tools from a range of therapies;
- Cognitive Behavioural therapy
- Psychodynamic working
- Transactional analysis
I work with Adults on a range of issues, I also trained as a specialist in Child mental health, meaning I can often support families whose children are experiencing difficult times.
Past clients have described me as "warm, friendly and knowledgeable" and I think this is an accurate description of how I am in my work.
I hold an enhanced disclosure and barring certificate, I am fully insured and I receive regular supervision.
What Areas do you specialise in or have experience in?
I have worked with literally hundreds of clients, all have been unique and have required tailored approaches. All the work I have done to date has been helping people manage thoughts, feelings and actions that have become overwhelming or distressing and are impacting their life, Here are just a few areas I have experience in ;
Stress related issues
Fatigue and chronic pain
Intrusive thoughts and Obsessive compulsive issues
Trauma and abuse
Mental Health conditions
Low self esteem and confidence issues
Issues following relationship breakdowns
This list isn't exhaustive as it would be difficult to list all the individual areas I have worked with. If you would like to speak on the phone or by email about a specific issue and to see if counselling could help you with it- please do get in touch.
A last word about Counsellors and therapists
In general most of us come to our roles because we have either had our own difficulties or have experience of helping others, as part of the majority of counselling training we have to have our own counselling. This means that we know what it feels like to sit in the other chair as a client.
I believe that we are a combination of our upbringing, our social relationships and our environments, because of this, I also believe that everyone has the innate capacity to move on from their difficulties and find a new, more positive way of being.
If you feel anxious about seeking the support of a counsellor - any counsellor, remember that we are human, non judgemental, we on the whole, love working with our clients and that ultimately we chose to do this job because we care and believe that people can move on from difficult times.
