As a practitioner I believe strongly in working collaboratively with my clients, both individuals and couples, and so at the assessment stage in the first appointment we will plan together how we will work. This can be either short term work or longer where appropriate and agreed with the client.
I have worked in counselling since 1989 and I spent 22 years from 1989 to 2011 working as a Counsellor and Counselling Psychologist in the Police service. I gained a unique insight in that time into the pressures of working in the emergency services and was privileged to work with some wonderful people. It also gave me a unique insight into the role of a counsellor in an organisation.
I was also involved at RELATE as a voluntary counsellor from 1990 to 1998 and gained much of my early training and experience working at Chesterfield RELATE. I found this training to be excellent and the my time seeing couples there was a tremendous experience. I still retain great enthusiasm for working with couples.
Since 2011 I have worked as a private practitioner seeing Clients who self refer as well as seeing referrals from employee assistance programmes (EAPs), from solicitors and insurers, and I am on the list to receive referrals from health insurers such as BUPA, Pru Health, and Aviva.
I integrate the person centred approach with technique based approaches such as Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). I also use hypnotherapy where appropriate and have a special interest in dysfunctional breathing and overbreathing. I therefore combine working in strong therapeutic relationships with the above technical skill areas to try to assist Clients to achieve real changes.
So if you have experienced a bereavement, a relationship breakdown, you are in need of couples counselling or you are experiencing relationship issues, you are having problems at work with relationships, performance problems at work / work stress, bullying,or if you have experienced post traumatic stress or trauma such as abuse or childhood sexual abuse, an industrial accident, been involved in another type of accident, if you are experiencing generalised or specific anxiety or depression, anger management issues problems we can work together collaboratively to work through the situation to improve your psychological well-being.
I also undertake clinical supervision with other counsellors. Again with respect to supervision I take an integrative approach but my style relies heavily on my person centred roots as my qualification in supervision was gained at Temenos in Sheffield. My training was a process that involved working with a group of supportive and challenging people and I see supervision as this kind of process.
We can talk about cases and also about you, the counselllor, in the process too.
I can also undertake to deliver bespoke training around the issues of stress, stress management, trauma in workplace environments for employers or staff associations.
Finally I undertake one to one coaching using the cognitive behavioural coaching model.
