About me

Introduction

I am a fully qualified Person Centred Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Supervisor. I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP). I have over 15 years experience of working with clients in various settings including 7 years within the NHS and have over 5,000 client hours.

I offer counselling for a wide range of issues. I specialise in bereavement, loss and grieving, depression, anxiety, workplace issues, trauma and abuse including sexual abuse and assault. Please see my Training and Experience profile below which highlights my specialist skills, knowledge and experience in these areas.

I offer supervision to Person Centred Counsellors and Psychotherapists as well as Counsellors and Psychotherapists from other modalities. I also offer supervision to other practitioners in the helping profession such as coaches, health professionals, teachers and providers of alternative therapies.

As well as counselling and psychotherapy I am also a qualified Coach. I offer coaching for a wide range of issues and specialise in the workplace, management, executive and life coaching.

My Approach To Counselling & Psychotherapy

I believe that it’s the relationship between the counsellor and client that is therapeutic and the means by which clients can heal and are empowered to change. By being empathic, non-judgemental and genuine I help build the therapeutic relationship. This creates trust and a safe space where the client is free to talk at their own pace and explore their difficulties including any underlying and unresolved feelings.

Why Person-Centred Counselling & Psychotherapy

At different times in our lives, we all have bad experiences that can be painful and traumatic. At these times we can experience lots of unpleasant feelings that we understandably want to avoid. People avoid these feelings by denying them, burying them or as some people say “put them in a box”.  These are all defence mechanisms and are not helpful as the feelings remain unresolved and are stored in our body.  Its what Gestalt Therapy refers to as "Unfinished business'" and these feelings will keep coming back in one form or another, sometimes in ways that we are not aware of or that don’t seem to connect with the original event but they do. It may even be an event that happened in our early childhood that is totally out of our awareness but the effect on us is still there.

I often give the example of someone having a major loss in their life. With loss comes pain and grieving and with grieving there is often feelings of sadness, anger and guilt. The intensity of these feelings are different for each situation and person involved. However, having these feelings is a normal part of the grieving process and they need to be experienced and expressed to heal and recover. If we don’t we can get stuck and sometimes the unresolved feelings get redirected and displaced elsewhere. For example anger might get directed at the wrong person or at the world or it might even get directed inward along with the guilt and sadness that we feel.

Person Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy, through the therapeutic relationship allows the client to experience, express and release their underlying, unresolved and denied feelings. This is done at the client’s own pace and is often accompanied by new insights, awareness and meaning. Sometimes the release can be in the form of a bodily felt shift or experience. For me what’s really important is that the changes that come about are permanent and this is why I believe the Person Centred approach is so effective.

Why Choose Me

For me, the Person Centred approach and the work that I do is not just a job, it’s my passion and a way of being that gives me purpose and meaning in life.

I describe myself as being a very sensitive and intuitive person and I believe these qualities are two of my greatest strengths as a practitioner. When I am with clients it’s my sensitivity and intuition that allows me to connect with their pain and suffering at a much deeper level and this is what allows healing to take place.

Its also my sensitivity and intuition that I might express as a genuine empathic response to clients. Whether that might be through expressing my thoughts, feelings, images, sensing or bodily felt feelings and experiences. This is what Counsellors refer to as ‘the use of self’. Its part of the process that helps clients find new insights, awareness and meaning as well as experiencing any underlying, unresolved and denied feelings.

Solution Focused Therapy

Solution Focused Therapy is more of a practical problem solving therapy and I can work in this way if the client prefers. Some difficulties and problems are very suited to this way of working.

Existential Issues

Existential issues can plague us all at different times in our life and a focus on these can sometimes be useful. For example fear of death and struggling with finding meaning in life. This can be especially so at times of bereavement and loss when our whole foundation can be undermined and all meaning in life can be lost.

Specialist Areas of Work

I offer individual counselling and psychotherapy for a wide range of issues and specialise in the following areas:

  • Bereavement, loss and grieving
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Workplace issues
  • Trauma
  • Abuse including sexual abuse and assault

Please see my Training and Experience profile below which highlights my specialist skills, knowledge and experience in these areas.

Counselling & Psychotherapy Sessions

I offer both short term focused work and long-term open-ended work. Short term focused work is normally 4 to 8 sessions. I usually suggest 4 sessions and then we can review our work together and whether it would be helpful to continue for more sessions.

Coaching

I am a qualified Coach. I offer coaching for a wide range of issues and specialise in workplace, management, executive and life coaching.

As a Coach my way of working is Person Centred. The Person Centred approach is ultimately about empowering clients towards their full potential, which fits well with coaching. Clients who come to coaching may already be happy and successful in their life but want to enhance it even further towards fulfilling their potential.

Integrating Coaching, Counselling & Psychotherapy

Because I work as a Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Coach then its possible for a client to move from one to the other should they wish to. For example a counselling client might feel less depressed and anxious and decide they want to move into Coaching to explore what they can do with their new found energy. It can also work the other way around where for example a coaching client might uncover a psychological issue or a stressful life event happens and they would benefit from counselling or psychotherapy.

Mentoring

I am a qualified mentor and I offer this to counsellors and coaches who are in training. I also offer it to anyone who is interested in learning counselling or coaching skills as these can be useful in many areas of life.

Group Work

I have trained as a group facilitator and I am experienced in running groups. With groups I work as a Person Centred facilitator in a similar way as I do with individuals. It’s about creating a safe and trusting environment for the group members by being empathic, non judgemental and genuine.

The type of group work I offer includes Personal development and Bereavement groups.

I also offer Group Coaching to organisations in the form of ‘Action Learning Sets’. These are essentially to help with problem solving in the work place but also improve working relationships and teaches counselling and coaching skills.

Supervision

I am a qualified Person Centred Supervisor at both certificate and diploma level. I have also trained in Hawkins and Shohets ‘Seven Eyed Model’ of Supervision. I offer supervision to Person Centred Counsellors and Psychotherapists as well as Counsellors and Psychotherapists from other modalities. I also offer supervision to other practitioners in the helping profession such as coaches, health professionals, teachers and providers of alternative therapies.

Supervision is also offered to small groups of Counsellors, Psychotherapists and Coaches. This can work well for people that are in training.

I attend consultative supervision for my work as a supervisor.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
