Katherine Fort-Schaale BA (Hons) MBACP (Accred) Adult & Youth Counsellor
Hi, I'm Katie, an experienced BACP Accredited Counsellor with extensive experience of working with Young People and Adults. I've worked with the YMCA for many years and through them CAMHS and for the past two years as a School Counsellor in a large secondary School, combining this with my private practice.
Life can become difficult, confusing, painful, empty and leave us feeling stuck. We can find ourselves in a destructive, depressive or anxious loop that has no end and no known beginning. It's also possible to live our whole existence defined or constrained by the standards others have set for us. This can create a negative internal voice and physical symptoms, like panic attacks, anxiety, insomnia or depression which hold us back, cause emotional conflict and prevent us reaching our true potential.
Sometimes we need time to stand back from our own lives and look on it with fresh eyes, this is why counselling works,
Counselling can offer you a unique opportunity to explore and focus on different areas of your life with complete confidentiality, in a relationship that is supportive, caring and non-judgemental. My aim if you chose me, is to make sure that our work together matches your changing needs and provides you with an opportunity for you to express yourself fully, allowing you to make discoveries, form new connections and create the reality that fits with how you want to be now. Deciding to take the time to pause, reflect and recalibrate is your first brave step towards something different. There are definite times on all our life paths when we need a companion to facilitate this, it's a brave step you're considering contacting a complete stranger, I know I've taken that step myself, but remember it's usually those things in life that we don't do that we regret, not the ones that we do.
I usually contract for 12 sessions, but we will review this as we progress. There are a variety of ways that I work which we can talk through when we meet, but it will be up to you to decide what feels like the right one for you.
Having worked with young people for many years I completely understand your reservations about coming to therapy, but equally I've also witnessed the enormous benefits it's brought to my Clients lives. Coping with life is very different from living it and it's often the fear of not being taken seriously, concern over how what we say may effect others or uncertainty over why we feel the way we feel that might have stopped you seeking help. Lots of my Clients have found ways to manage through self-harming, trichotillomania, restrictive eating or over exercise. Although this has helped them manage their depression, anxiety, panic attacks and other difficult emotional issues these are not long term solutions and I'll work carefully with you to form new coping strategies that will support you into the future. .
Counselling can take many forms so don't worry it doesn't have to be the traditional conversationally based relationship and we will discover exactly what works best for you, which will probably change session by session depending on what you bring. It's so important that the choice of who you want to work with is yours which is why I offer a short introductory meeting so you can make that decision. I'm approachable, honest, creative and fun ( behind this middle aged exterior) so if that sounds like the sort of person you are looking for then email, phone or text me today.
