About me

Welcome to my profile

Hello, I'm Kath  and I have a MSc in Psychotherapy.  I'm registered with the United Kingdom of Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) as I have met the training and exacting standards required by this organisation to  become a member..   I’ve supported many individuals and couples for over 35 years to make significant and lasting changes. I'm passionate about the work I undertake and I would welcome the opportunity to work with you.

How counselling can help

Together we will identify and explore the issues you are facing and what is getting in the way of you living the life you want. I believe you are the expert on yourself and I will help you find your own way to move forward and take positive steps for change. Some of the issues I frequently work with include:

  • ·      Relationship difficulties (home, work or play)
  • ·      Anxiety, panic attacks, depression and low mood
  • ·      Feeling sad and/or vulnerable
  • ·      Shame, guilt, jealousy
  • ·      Inner conflict e.g. harsh inner critic, perfectionism
  • ·      Bereavement, grief and loss
  • ·      Lack of confidence, low self-esteem, feeling stuck
  • ·      Loneliness
  • ·      Historical abuse: sexual, physical and/or emotional

How I work and what you can expect from me

I will provide a safe, supportive, accepting and encouraging environment to help you find a way through the difficulties you are experiencing. This maybe something recent and specific and you know just what it is, or maybe it is a continual sense that 'I’m not good enough' or a general dissatisfaction with life. Often it is important to understand the past as this can often help make sense of the present.

I am a trained couple counsellor and have significant experience of working with same sex and heterosexual couples who for different reasons were unhappy and going through a ‘rough patch’.  All relationships have ups and downs and sometimes things can get a bit stuck and it is difficult to find a way forward.  I will listen and support you in finding effective ways of communicating and connecting so you are able to make changes and develop a more satisfying and lasting relationship.

My work is underpinned by many years of professional training and client experience.  I will particularly draw on Transactional Analysis (TA) which is an accessible theory that will help you understand why you think, feel and behave the way you do, both in relation to yourself, and others.  TA helps us look at the past and can be useful to understand some of the ideas we carry around in our heads and influence us on a daily basis.

I’m an advocate of mindfulness and self-compassion skills and I will share these practices if you and I think they may be helpful. Research has consistently shown that both of these modalities can have a profound impact on our minds, health and levels of happiness. I think mutual humour is also an important part of therapy!

Getting started

I know it can be tough taking the first step!  I invite you to telephone or email me to arrange a free 15-minute telephone consultation.  This is an opportunity for you to tell me about yourself and for me to answer any queries you may have. If you like what you hear you can make an initial appointment to meet with me.

First session

I am based in Stockport with easy parking, buses and trains close by.  I provide a warm, comfortable and confidential space to meet with you and I will make you a cuppa!  This is an opportunity for you to tell me more about yourself and your current difficulties. You will also be able to check whether you feel at ease with me and whether I’m someone you can trust and talk to.  It is also important for me to check whether I am able to offer you the help you need.

We can arrange further sessions if we are both happy to proceed.  Our work together can be short term for an agreed period, or on an open-ended basis.  This may be dependent on the outcome you want from therapy.

Please call me on 0797 1669570, text, or email me if you think you would like to arrange this first session.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I have worked extensively supporting parents of children/young people who present with behavioural and relationship difficulties. Parenting can be highly rewarding whilst at the same time challenging and stressful. Often it can be helpful to talk to an experienced person and have the opportunity to build confidence and implement different strategies to manage your child's behaviour.

Please contact me for a short telephone conversation if you wish to discuss your situation, and whether I am able to support you with the particular difficulties you and your child/young person are experiencing.
