Kate Howell DipCouns, PGDip, Registered MBACP
My name is Kate Howell, I’m a qualified registered counsellor & psychotherapist based in the Swansea area. My experience includes working with clients aged from 14yrs-85yrs, in counselling agencies around the country but most recently in South Wales. I am also a Bereavement Counsellor with the NHS Bereavement Service in Carmarthenshire.
How I work
My passions are for working with young people and young adults (11-25yrs), and also as a Christian Counsellor. The way I like to work involves using the different modalities in counselling, combining them in a relational way that works best for clients, and results in the best outcome for them. My preferred way of working involves the Person-Centred, Gestalt and Relational modalities, however I mould my approach to whatever your needs are. This is completely up to you, I am led by what you want and need.
Christian Counselling is the same as secular counselling, however it is more spiritual with both of us knowing we believe. By knowing we both believe, it can add context to issues, and also to the therapeutic relationship where there is mutual understanding. I can sometimes offer scripture that is appropriate, and I can pray with you if you ask.
What can I expect in a first session?
The first session is an introduction, it is half assessment and half counselling session. In this session, we can discuss you needs, goals or expectations for counselling, and making a plan together for the best way forward. The cost of this session is the same as normal counselling session.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have been trained most recently, by the University of South Wales on their BACP Accredited Post Graduate course in Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy. This training is where I gained my most intense and enlightening experiences in both placement and learning. It is where I learnt what I feel is most important about the counselling relationship and process, which is the client, their emotions and their needs. Being mutually honest with each other, respecting and accepting each other for who we are.
Prior training to this includes a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (CPCAB) followed by the BACP Certificate of Proficiency, and also other counselling vocational courses, Levels 2 & 3 in Counselling Skills & Studies (CPCAB). All these were achieved with Listening Post Counselling Agency, in Gloucestershire.
From working in general counselling agencies, I have gained a broad experience in working with different issues. The most common issues I have worked with include, depression & anxiety, stress & work- related issues, relationships, abuse, confidence & self -esteem, suicidal thoughts, social anxiety, family issues, trauma, life events, loss and bereavement.
