About me

Hello I am Karen and welcome to my profile.I'm a professional qualified therapist working in private practice 'Hope In Hand'.

As we journey through life, we can all experience difficulties at some point. But these difficulties will be different for each individual. Whether it be current stresses and worries or an aspect of life that is troubling you, counselling can provide a safe confidential place for you to bring your troubles
Working with long - established counselling organisations in Swindon and Chippenham in addition to my own private work here with 'Hope In Hand', I have experience in counselling Adults and journeying with them through a wide range of issues some of which include:

Low self-esteem, Bereavement and Loss, Stress and Anxiety, Depression. I also specialising in working with issues such as Trauma/Abuse, includes issues such Self Harm.

How I work

As your Counsellor, I offer a friendly, warm space where you can express yourself freely and safely and explore options without fear of judgement. I tailor therapy to your needs and my aim will be to support you to find your own solutions.

I work in a sensitive, intuitive, empathic and non directive way. I don't tell you what to do or give advice but, where appropriate; challenge where necessary facilitating growth and change and offer my experience of how certain ways of thinking or behaving could make you feel lighter about life and situations.

I am trained in Integrative Counselling, using a Person Centred approach which draws on a useful blend of Psychodynamic insights, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (C.B.T), Developmental and Attachment Theories within its model.

What this means is that, as every individual is unique, this blended approach allows me to tailor the therapy to your needs and while I'm there with you, I am also separate enough from your life to be able to reflect a different perspective.

I am also able to work creatively in sessions. Creativity is a useful approach for people who may find 'talking therapies' too challenging, or who find that they can feel 'stuck' when talking. This is always a free choice and if this is something that you feel you would benefit from, we could discuss this and include this in our work together.

What I offer

I believe the most important component of counselling is the therapeutic relationship between client and counsellor. Therefore, meeting for an initial session is important because it will allow me to assess whether I am the right therapist for you. It equally allows you to get to know me, to ask as many questions as you like and to gauge whether you would feel comfortable enough working with me on a weekly basis.

I offer one to one adult counselling (18yr +), for a wide range of issues. I offer both long term and short term counselling and this will depend very much on you and your needs. Initially, I offer up to six sessions after which we can review your progress and decide if you would like to continue with some further sessions, or if longer term counselling could be of benefit. Each session will normally last about 1hr and I will work gently at a pace that suits your needs. Each session will take place at an agreed time set each week.

If you feel you'd like to talk to me and find out how I can help you, please phone me for a chat or if you prefer you can email me and leave a brief summary of what is worrying you and I will contact you. Please visit my website www.hopeinhand.net, where there is some more detailed information on what I offer and how I work.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
