Dr Justin Havens - Trauma & PTSD Specialist - EMDR Consultant
Hello, and a very warm welcome to my profile.
I am a psychological therapist accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and as a Consultant by EMDR Europe. After a career firstly in the military and then in commerce as a management consultant, I have retrained in a field where the sole aim is to relieve psychological distress in others.
I offer a confidential service based in Cheltenham using therapeutic approaches known for their effectiveness, such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and CBT, amongst others.
Deep change is possible in just a few sessions!
My aim is for you to complete the work in the fewest sessions possible, and for significant change to occur in your life, rather than to keep you in therapy for an indefinite period. I see most clients for 4-6 sessions.
Please contact me to book a first session where we can discuss your needs and I can outline my approach to help you. Sessions usually last for 55 minutes and cost £70 and usually take place weekly, though this can be modified according to your needs.
How can I help you?
I work in an empathic and non-judgemental way, in order to facilitate a process of healing and change. I also believe in empowering you by describing in clear terms what you are experiencing and what the process of change involves.
Mental Health issues and psychological distress can take many forms, and usually manifest as stress, depression or anxiety and problem behaviours such as addictions, compulsions or relationship and sleep issues. Identifying, understanding and treating the root causes of these symptoms can lead to personal change that is transformational and long-lasting.
Psychological trauma is often at the root of these issues, and sometimes people are not aware of how life events have impacted their mental health.
What is EMDR?
EMDR is an internationally-approved treatment for all kinds of psychological trauma arising from accidents, abuse, assaults, natural disasters, and bereavements, to attachment traumas that may be experienced in childhood.

“Therapy with Justin helped me to open ’emotional boxes’ from the past that I thought were dealt with, and sort them out. This helped me to learn to live in the ‘now’, or present. I would recommend Justin to others.” (5 sessions Sept 2018)

Other areas of counselling I deal with
Quick resolution of nightmares and other sleep issues - please contact me to discuss this exciting approach which I am currently researching for use with combat veterans.
Nightmares can be very frightening and have a significant impact on sleep quality and overall functioning. They can also be repetitive and linked to traumatic or adverse life events from the past. The good news is that there is a very effective technique that you can learn that will permanently stop your old nightmares, and provide you with the tools to deal with any future ones. This skill can be taught in a single 50 minute session, and you can then implement the idea immediately to stop your nightmares.
- Behavioural therapy
- Cognitive and behavioural therapies
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
- Cognitive therapy
I currently charge £70 per 55-minute session.
A great deal can be accomplished in relatively few sessions and I will be able to give an indication at the first session how many sessions I think may be required. I see most clients for 4-6 sessions. My aim is for you to complete the work in the fewest sessions possible, and for significant change to occur in your life, rather than to keep you in therapy for an indefinite period.
Safety and Confidentiality
BACP's ethical framework underpins my therapeutic practice, which maintains a strong focus on client safety and confidentiality and always acting in your best interests. Combined with a high level of technical proficiency, this leads to rapid and long-lasting symptom reduction in relatively few sessions - over the course of several years, my average number of sessions is 7. A fear of flying may be resolved in 1 or 2 sessions, though complex childhood trauma may take more than 10 sessions to resolve.
Anonymous quotes from former clients:
“My trauma is now like a spec of dust from the past.” This was from a client who had been severely sexually assaulted, had nightmares and couldn’t’ sleep, and whose quality of life had deteriorated significantly in the 18 months since the traumatic event. (5 sessions March 2019)
“Therapy has given me more control over my emotions and feelings, and I feel more content. I am no longer continuously striving for a quick fix.” (40 sessions over 2 years Oct 2018)
“Justin very quickly made several key insights that really helped me to understand some of the underlying issues that I wanted to deal with, and that formed a solid foundation for future sessions. I really liked the balance of talking therapy with EMDR, and ultimately appreciated Justin’s ready ability and willingness to adapt each session according to what I or he felt would be most helpful on the day. A sense of humour should never be underestimated and I really liked Justin’s lightness of touch when he deemed it appropriate, a judgment he always got right.” (8 sessions Dec 2017)
“I immediately felt at ease having met Justin, and he provided a safe and non-judgmental environment in which I felt comfortable to talk. I am completely amazed at how few sessions I needed to feel lighter and much happier, having had years of regular talking therapy. I am hugely grateful” (7 sessions Sept 2017)
“This is my first experience of EMDR after 20 years of therapy – I am amazed at the changes to my everyday life” (13 sessions Feb 2017)
