Dr. Julie Hannan (Chartered Counselling Psychologist & Psychotherapist.)
Chartered Counselling Psychologist and Existential Psychotherapist
Hi, I have been working as a private practitioner for over 10 years and I work with adults on an individual basis who are experiencing difficulties. I offer face-to-face therapy in Alvechurch and via Skype.
Having worked previously in Birmingham in finance and then as a Director and Board member of a multi-national financial organisation in Jersey, I retrained as a psychologist working as a Director and Trustee at a voluntary counselling organisation in Birmingham and at several NHS hospitals in the West Midlands.
I have a very positive optimistic approach to working with clients believing that in the right environment anything is possible. I really enjoy my work and believe that helping people make desired changes in their lives can be an empowering experience for them.
Why do people come for therapy?
The majority of my clients (50% women, 50% men) are professional and entrepreneurial and have never been for therapy before as they have always dealt whatever life has thrown at them. When they contact me, life has become difficult and often they are experiencing burnout, a relationship breakdown, trauma, a feeling that life has become meaningless or that life has become overwhelming or feel finally ready to explore areas of their early life which may be affecting their parenting or holding them back. Often my clients have been disappointed with the results of CBT and counselling and want a deeper understanding of issues that are troubling them.
How can therapy help?
Therapy is not just a chat!
It is a deep exploration of how and why issues are troubling you. Therapy helps you recognise unhelpful patterns you may be repeating in your work, social or intimate life, how the negative impact of unresolved trauma may be currently affecting your life or how you may unconsciously be applying unhelpful rules and restrictions to yourself that ultimately impact your wellbeing, enjoyment and quality of life. Therapy helps to uncover and unlock these unhelpful and damaging aspects of your current and earlier life and create an opportunity to work, with the help of your therapist, towards a more satisfying and happy life by finding the courage to be and act differently in the here and now with mindful insight into why you were held back in the past. At the end of the day, therapy helps you leave the past in the past and move forward with a sense of freedom!
If you think therapy might be useful for you, then give me a call, I'll be happy to chat with you to see if I can help and if not, then I'll certainly try and guide you towards the right help.

Training, qualifications & experience
I have a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Integrative Psychotherapy and a Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
I don’t believe in a ‘one size fits all’ approach to therapy as each person is unique, therefore I work integratively which means I use different approaches within the counselling relationship dependent on your needs. I have trained in a variety of approaches including existential psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)and transactional analysis.
Therapy can be short or long term dependent on your personal circumstances, and we would discuss this at our first meeting.
I deal with a wide range of issues including:
- Relationship difficulties
- Resilience in the Workplace
- Burnout and compassion fatigue
- Childhood trauma
- Low self esteem
- Postnatal depression
